Yew Tree Cottage is an ideal base for couples to explore this picturesque area and the South Downs National Park.

This charming, thatched, single-storey barn conversion is situated adjacent to the owner’s home, with views over a trickling stream and rolling countryside with sheep grazing. Inside is a spacious open plan, living/dining room with a vaulted beamed ceiling, and a kitchenette at one end. There is a step down to the bathroom and twin bedroom and an additional seating area.
Why not take a leisurely stroll to one of the local pubs which are within approximately a 10-minute walk, or the village shop at Cheriton for provisions. The popular town of Alresford is 3 miles away and has lovely colourful Georgian architecture and offers riverside walks, further eateries, inns, tea rooms and shops. For keen cyclists and walkers, there is the Ox Drove cycle track nearby and routes from Alton to Fareham which link to the South Downs National Park. There are many good golf clubs in the area, the nearest being at Alresford, and trout fishing in the Meon Valley.
Yew Tree Cottage is ideal for couples who wish to explore the many scenic walks in the area, as well as sightseeing attractions. National Trust’s Hinton Ampner House and Gardens is approximately 1 mile away, and the Mid Hants steam railway, The Watercress Line, at nearby Alresford makes a great historic journey back through time! The historic cathedral city of Winchester is 8 miles away, and also near to the market town of Petersfield, 11 miles away. Southampton and Portsmouth with the Spinnaker Tower, day trips to the Isle of Wight by ferry, shopping outlets and historic dockyard with ships are all within easy reach. Less than 30 minutes drive will take you to the nearest beach at Hayling Island and about 40 minutes drive to the wonderful sandy beach at West Wittering. We had a fantastic break at yew tree cottage! We used it as a base for our Christmas shopping holiday, so visited Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester which were all within easy distance. On other days we just enjoyed walks in the beautiful countryside around us and the lovely cosy comfortable cottage!

Tessa and Nigel made us very welcome and the cottage was so comfortable and well equipped. We would definitely stay there again.

The cottage is spacious and well-equipped, and the heating system worked beautifully when the weather turned chilly. The location is lovely and Tessa and Nigel are ideal hosts, never obtrusive but always there to help and spend time explaining things, even when busy themselves. As readers and crossword puzzlers, the only thing we would have wished for was a little more light (the barn conversion only has windows in one side, with an overhanging thatch). Taller and more targeted reading lights would solve the problem. But we were there to see the area and had a wonderful week, walking, driving and sightseeing during the day and enjoying the local pubs and restaurants in the evening.

Very friendly hosts and the cottage is quite spacious for 2 people but there is no kitchen to speak of. Just a couple of rings and a microwave oven. I wouldn't have wanted to prepare a meal in there. Only one cupboard and the old second hand cutlery is in a basket in the cupboard but not a lot of kitchen equipment otherwise. Glasses and mugs on open shelf underneath a dusty beam. Lots of old furniture and cushions everywhere. You could seat a dozen people on all the old sofas but it is only a cottage for 2. The owners could have made much better use of the space. Comfy beds and clean bathroom. There is no garden to sit in, we were confined to a bench outside the cottage in the yard where the cars are parked and no shade. The owners have 2 friendly little dogs who wander in and out if you let them. Towels and bedlinen provided but glad I took some top sheets with me as the duvets on their own would have been far too hot. Only one hand towel provided in the bathroom and none in the kitchen so you might want to take more. OK for a last minute booking but wouldn't be my first choice for a place to say.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; I'm glad to read that you found us to be friendly and that the beds were comfy and the bathroom clean. However I was sorry and somewhat surprised to read your overall review and low score, especially after your nice message in the visitor’s book. I am sorry the property was not up to expectation, there is a kitchenette at the far end (rather than a full kitchen) and there are photos plus it is described as this and also to what equipment is there. The living space is indeed spacious, and the additional cushions are provided to make it even more comfy – infact all of our other guests have talked very positively about this. We don’t advertise that there is a garden, however guests tend to enjoy walks to some scenic walks close by as well as pubs in the area too. I wish you would have contacted me during your stay as the chances are the issues could have been solved quickly and easily.

Tessa and Nigel greeted us on arrival showed us how everything worked, showed us the garden and where our dog could go, he had free range of the garden. We were greeted with a bottle of wine in the fridge and home made brownies. The area was lovely and we would go back there. Many Thanks to Tessa and Nigel.
