If your idea of Cornwall is all tearooms and cream teas, then it’s time to rethink this wild and wonderful corner of the world. The UK’s most south-westerly point promises the ideal location for romantic weekend getaways, and feels a world away from the hustle and bustle, stresses and strains of daily life.
Come in the summer and you might be forgiven for thinking you’ve wandered a little further than you have; with plenty of sun, stretches of sandy beach and clear, practically turquoise waters, Cornwall can feel more exotic than it really is. Famous for its outdoor pursuits, it’s a great choice for couples who like their activities on the adventurous side, with surfing a popular pastime in the towns of Newquay and Padstow, for example.
But even if you’re not the outdoorsy type, don’t despair: there’s plenty to keep you busy. Padstow is a great destination for lovers of food, with Rick Stein having reinvigorated the town and the cuisine. Come here and you may never look at food the same way again – the fish is as fresh as you can get, the inspiration and ingredients local, and the flavours magnificent.
Other essential stopovers for couples craving a little romance are Tintagel and Port Isaac. Tintagel is where King Arthur is supposed to have been born, adding an air of history and mystery to the already impressive castle that is perched on the clifftop here. After exploring this pocket of ancient history, you and your loved one will want to head to Port Isaac, which forms the typical, idyllic Cornish fishing village you’ve been picturing in your imagination. Colourful houses, cobbled lanes, cob-walled cottages and a medieval harbour have all combined to make this fishing village absolutely picture-perfect.
If you’re looking for something wildly romantic and straight out of a Daphne du Maurier novel, then why not try the lovely town of Liskeard. Located right on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor, this is a market town that dates as far back as 1240 and has been charming visitors ever since. This pretty little place is the perfect spot to unwind after a wild walk along the moor.
We have a wide range of romantic cottages to inspire and entice you while planning your romantic getaways. From stone cottages set among beautiful countryside to little hideaways hidden among the lanes of an ancient harbour town, or modern barn conversions with an indoor pool, we have what you’re looking for.
