Grasmere has a particularly rich literary history and was home to William Wordsworth, Thomas De Quincey and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The Wordsworth Museum and Art Gallery has an exceptional display of artefacts and allows visitors to step back in time to the era of the Romantic Movement. Next to the Museum is Dove Cottage, which was rented first to Wordsworth and then to Quincy, and is one of the village’s most popular landmarks. St Oswald’s church bears the graves of William Wordsworth and his wife; the tiny chapel dates back to the 14th Century.

Grasmere is ideally located for those who enjoy outdoor activities and the walk between the village and Langdale is one of Cumbria’s most popular trails. The walk takes you past Castle How, Lang How and Silver How and circumnavigates the Tarns of Codale and Craig. It captures the essence of the area beautifully and can also be enjoyed by bicycle.     Rhubarb Cottage is very traditional, perfect for the smaller party looking for a comfortable base in the Langdale Valley. The wood burning stove, set in slate mined from the quarry that can be seen on the hillside beyond, is certainly the focal point of the lounge, that’s if you can tear yourself away from the window seat and that stunning view! Parking at Rhubarb Cottage is on the roadside towards the church although you can pull up outside the cottage to unload.

There are also many low level walks from the cottage which could take in well known hostelries such as The Old Dungeon Ghyll Inn, Sticklebarn Tavern and the Britannia Inn, Elterwater. A modern cottage, it is compact, well planned and equipped, perhaps best suited for two adults and two children. This is a great base for a couple or family in one of the best locations of The Lake District.
