It takes its name from the 12th-century castle that dominates the city perched on a high rock overlooking the city and river. For foodies, locally sourced produce can be found in the independent specialist shops that line the high street, from bakeries to butchers, and there is a monthly farmers market which is held in the Market Place. The Bowes Museum is an impressive French-style château, surrounded by stunning gardens and parkland. Considered one of the most significant museums outside London, it is home to a collection of European fine and decorative arts.
