Perfectly nestled away overlooking the beautiful Hury Reservoir, Buckswell Cottage really is set in the most magical of surroundings, within the grounds of a working upland farm. With south facing views overlooking the stunning scenery of Baldersdale, guests will find this detached cottage a perfect retreat for a peaceful romantic break or creative and art inspired holiday. With views from every window there’s always something new to see.

The unspoilt beauty of this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can help you relax and unwind from everyday life. Unleash your creativity by drawing on nature to write, paint, draw or photograph all the area has to offer. The peace and tranquillity can work wonders for guests, helping them feel refreshed whilst creating lasting memories.

Perfect for walkers and cyclists, there are many established public footpaths that pass directly through the dale, including the Pennine Way. They link with the small villages of Romaldkirk, Mickleton, Middleton-inTeesdale and Egglestone, providing many scenic walks. A popular route winds along the banks of Hury Reservoir and can be extended further to link with Blackton and Balderhead reservoirs, before taking you past the former home of the famous Hannah Hauxwell. The land she farmed is now a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the diverse flora and fauna it boasts. For avid birdwatchers, this habitat supports a variety of native birds, some of which are on the red list for endangered species. Examples to keep a look out for in the surrounding landscape are the curlew, lapwing and the black grouse.

Alternatively there is fly fishing for trout on Hury Reservoir, or water sports including sailing and windsurfing on nearby Grassholme Reservoir. A little further afield, but still within a 10 mile drive, there are opportunities to go clay pigeon shooting, golfing or enjoy a gentle stroll to High Force waterfall.

The quaint little villages between Buckswell Cottage and the historic market town of Barnard Castle are also well worth a visit. Between them they have a good variety of shops including, butchers, bakers, fish and chip shops, pubs, cafés, bistros arts and craft shops and antique shops. The Bowes Museum, Raby Castle and Eggleston Abbey can be reached within a 30-minute drive. Shop 5 miles, pub and restaurant 4 miles.

This was our second break at Buckswell Cottage and it won’t be our last. The location is outstanding with beautiful views over Hury reservoir. It’s secluded yet within easy reach of local amenities. There are good shops and restaurants a short drive away but if you want to be reclusive there’s no need to see another soul! Good walks although we drove to the reservoir car parks (5 minutes) and walked from there. You can hit the pennine way and Hannah Hauxwell’s farm is a mile up the road. Sunrises and sunsets can be outstanding and a morning cuppa on the patio sets you up for the day. Plenty of wildlife around and lots of birding available from the sofa!! Perfect cottage

The cottage totally lived up to expectations. So peaceful, and scenic. Lovely cakes on arrival, and sitting in the lounge, overlooking the fields and resevoir, we instantly felt relaxed, and our dogs loved it. Very helpful and friendly owners. The shower room, would perhaps benefit with an update, but we liked the cottage so much we have rebooked for next year.

Lovely cottage positioned in fantastic location. Clean and very well equipped. Nearest shops only a short drive away and the views from the property far outweighed this. If you want total peace and quiet apart from birds, walks from the door then this is the place to stay
