Would consider removing dishwasher and install a washing machine- would be ideal after muddy walks with dog. Only downside was it was about a twenty minute drive to get to a local shop but pubs were good.

Esk cottage was in a beautiful location, with a beautiful river at the bottom of the garden. We saw pheasants in the garden and trout swimming up the waterfall and a heron fishing. It had everything you would need, even a slow cooker which was great. The stairs would be a bit dodgy for some people as they are very steep. The cottage was very cute, but as it was December, it would have been nice for some festive decorations. The bed was very comfortable and we were warm enough. Unfortunately the cottage could have done with a good clean, I cleaned the cobwebs up myself as well as the mould in the bathroom, which was a bit disappointing, we also moved the chest to pick something up, and that hadn’t been cleaned behind for a long while, I know this happens but it wasn’t what we expected, for a holiday cottage.

Cute cottage but definitely not suitable for the infirm or for young children! We had to change a lightbulb in the lounge (not a problem) but were slighty annoyed that the only heating in the bathroom, the towel rail, was not working.

Before booking the cottage I read several of the reviews, some of which were far from flattering and I very nearly didn't book it. I'm glad I did, as its a beautiful spot and definitely worth the visit. Sadly, the cottage isn't very clean. When you first arrive it looks great, very bright and clean, sadly its not very clean at all. Lots of dust under the carpets and the carpets themselves didn't appear to have been vacuumed and had bits of crisp sitting in the carpet pile. The shower didn't drain properly and I did think it was going to overflow onto the bathroom floor. Fortunately that didn't happen.. There were several pots and pans that looked like they'd never been washed and the oven was dirty, burnt on food and fat. There was no wifi at all when trying to sign in got a message saying "enter code for Esk cottages" but I could find no information as to where this was. This is a very negative review but I think the owners should be made aware of some of the issues which seem to have been mentioned many times but remain unresolved. Its a great shame really because its such a beautiful place with a lot to do and see. I would book again but would want some assurance that the problems mentioned had been dealt with.

We had a very quiet and relaxing holiday, with just the sounds of bird song and the River Esk flowing past. The cottage was cosy and comfortable. It was easy to pick up our food supplies in Whitby. The Horseshoe Hotel provided tasty, home-made meals and the Postgate Inn had a pleasant beer garden. There was plenty to see and do nearby, amid the outstanding scenery. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in Esk Cottage.

Traditional cottage in good location, peaceful when neighbouring cottages not occupied, small bathroom, bed mattress needs changing as not very comfortable. Lovely cottage garden. Could do with a few extra dinner plates and bowls as we had to keep washing up those few available. Good selection of tv channels and wifi signal very good. One heater has no power and the other one is quite tricky to set up but once that's done it works well. Steep staircase wasn't a problem. There is no allocated parking as advised in the instructions, rather it is first come first serve. It was quite tricky to find the cottage on arrival, better instructions would help.
