High in the hamlet of Riber in the shadow of the castle just outside Matlock and surrounded by tranquil rolling countryside, The Stables is situated in the grounds of the privately-owned Riber Hall, and is inclusive of a beautiful garden with heated furnished terrace. There are ten en-suite bedrooms of 17 to 40 square metres, equipped with Sony LCD TVs, dining areas with a hostess trolley and chandeliers which light the two marble dining tables and micro kitchens with combination microwave oven, fridge, kettle/toaster and Wedgwood china. The communal kitchen/dining room and living area/conservatory, which is accessed via an uncovered walkway in the garden, provides the perfect place to get all your party together for dining, socialising and relaxing. For days out there is plenty to do and see. In the neighbouring village of Holloway is the former home of Florence Nightingale whilst down in the Derwent Valley at Cromford, the World Heritage Site boasts the world’s first water-powered cotton-spinning factories, built by Sir Richard Arkwright and Jedediah Strutt. Just under four miles is the delightful town of Matlock Bath boasting smart riverside cafés and bars slotted in between more traditional pubs, restaurants, tea shops, ice-cream parlours and plenty of restaurants. Here visitors can also sample a ride to The Heights of Abraham by cable car and admire the views of ‘Little Switzerland’ as Byron once described this area. For the more inquisitive visit the Mining Museum for a fascinating look into the area’s past. Shop 2 miles, pub 1½ miles.

This is the ideal home for a large family but not too elderly, the access to the kitchen on arrival with lots of food and essentials is a bit of a hike but could be a lot easier. The steps and the uneven surface could be a problem however it is warm comfortable but also brings everyone together. The TVs where not tuned in and some of our party could not sort it out and after a call to the contact number we found this was a waste of time as we was told you booked through an agent phone them, being ex soldiers and our wives we soldiered on and had a real good time but would not go back due to telephone conversation with the house keeper who was not interested.

Stunning location with fabulous walks, countryside and activities nearby. The stables were great. Perfect for a big group. Warm and cosy in winter as all well heated. A bit of an unusual layout as the communal area is separate but only by a few stone steps down the side of the garden. But pretty easy to navigate even in December. We missed the dishwasher a little, but apparently one will be installed soon. Lovely treats left for us on arrival. Really good service in terms of communication, before and after visit, with the housekeeper helping us with all enquiries. Security deposit also returned very promptly. A very lovely place for a big group get together.

We loved our stay at the stables. The rooms were all very clean and beds were very comfortable. The bathrooms are a little dated but clean and the kitchen lacked a dishwasher which for a big group is essential. Also a toilet off the conservatory would be nice for convenience as you have to go back to your room.

Absolutely loved our time at The Stables at Riber Hall. Beautiful building, lovely location (remote with gorgeous views) and everything we needed for a fantastic time. I couldn't recommend this property enough.

20 of us here for a 70th party. Really quirky rooms but everything was there. Biggest drawback with this place is you have to go outside from the accommodation block down a dozen steps in the garden to get to the sun room and kitchen/dining area. No probs on a lovely sunny day but it rained cats and dogs the whole weekend so we frequently got wet. Also no toilets down here, you have to go back up to your room. Also, no dishwasher in the kitchen so plenty of teamwork required. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, it is an oddball sort of place, just be aware of the drawbacks. It is mentioned in the website, I just didn't realise that it would be a bit of a pain because of the weather.

Gorgeous place, so close to Matlock. We had a family gathering for a surprise 60th, and Lolly the housekeeper even set up a few balloons, cake and some fizz!! My mother was thrilled. The kids had an excellent time in the garden, and we visited Matlock and a farm park. The kitchen is very well equipped and the ideal size for a large party, the oven is excellent and I was able to cater for us all easily. The common area is not connected internally to the house, which was only an issue in the rain but not in the good weather. The bedrooms are decorated to a high standard, some bathrooms could use a little modernising but each has charm and character, and privacy! I would definitely return.

Fantastic accommodation in a great location central to Matlock, perfect for a family holiday. Our only observation was that for families with young children there are only two bedrooms within earshot of the living room area. The rest of the rooms are situated along two corridors in the adjoining building. Depending on the age of the children it is only a short walk but I would not have felt comfortable leaving my 2 year old in those rooms, luckily we only had two couples with children so it worked for us. For families without children there would be no issues and I could not recommend highly enough !
