This property is part of our English Country Cottages collection

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Enjoy a stroll in the 2-acre gardens of this spacious, characterful Georgian property which is well placed for the Lakes, Dales and Bowland Forest.

Hazel Grove House is a wonderful Georgian residence, originally a farmhouse, which has benefited from extensive upgrading. Notable changes were made by a gentleman doctor owner in the 1840s, and full renovation by the current owner, who lives in an adjoining cottage, means that the property offers an excellent level of comfort and facilities. Spacious and well-presented living spaces provide families and groups the flexibility to spread out a little and utilise the space to their own requirements. The kitchen flows beautifully into the dining area, sure to be a hub for socialising and enjoying time shared around the table. The more formal drawing room is complemented by the cosy snug, complete with a wood-burning stove for cosy evenings in, and the additional relaxation area on the top floor allows guests a separate TV or quiet area. The generous bedrooms are beautifully presented and benefit from bathroom facilities for each room. Guests will no doubt appreciate the convenience of such an arrangement when holidaying in larger numbers.
Whilst first impressions portray a grand country residence with a formal frontage, the charm of the original farmhouse remains, giving a homely and comfortable feel to this spacious property. Sitting in 2 acres and tucked away in countryside on the edge of the Lakes, this fabulous holiday property has a lot to offer families and groups of friends looking for a high standard of accommodation in a most convenient location.
The delightful formal gardens, with year-round interest, are a joy to wander around, being well stocked with a variety of colourful and scented plants. Nature lovers will delight in the regular visits to the gardens of the roe deer and fallow deer which inhabit the surrounding fields, as well as hedgehogs, frogs, toads, a green woodpecker, curlews, herons, pheasants and owls. A short drive away in the Silverdale and Arnside AONB, birdwatchers will delight in Leighton Moss, home to the BBC’s Spring Watch.
Hazel Grove House offers an ideal location from which to explore a choice of popular destinations within a 30-minute drive, including The Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and the Forest of Bowland. The popular market towns of Kendal and Kirkby Lonsdale are both well worth a visit, offering a selection of cafés, bars and restaurants for all tastes and occasions, along with a good mix of independent traders and popular stores. For those drawn to the coast, the Kent Estuary and Morecambe Bay are within easy reach, and walkers and cyclists will enjoy the routes available for all abilities. Inland, Farleton Knott is a popular local attraction and visible from the gardens, and from here and neighbouring Hutton Roof Crags, the Lake District Fells across Morecambe Bay can be seen, as well as the Howgill Fells and Middleton Fells in the Yorkshire Dales, together with the moors of Bowland Forest. Farleton Knott has some of the best-preserved limestone pavements in Britain and is a designated SSSI. Beach 4 miles. Shop 500 yards, pub 1 mile, restaurant 2 miles.

We had a wonderful time at Hazel Grove. The house is simply stunning, a real sense of grandeur with a beautiful furniture and incredibly comfortable beds. The house was spotlessly clean and had all the facilities to provide a truly special holiday. Davinia was a very helpful and responsive host. I would highly recommend Hazel Grove House to my nearest and dearest.

We are a group of 12 ladies who take a break from the rat race every year and take ourselves off for a long weekend in November. We make it a Christmas themed weekend, enjoying everything from secret Santa to a full Christmas dinner. Hazel Grove House was just perfect in every way. Davinia was a superb host, going to the trouble of dressing the house for Christmas earlier than she would normally and the delicious cake and wine left as part of the welcome pack was much appreciated. The house was spotlessly clean, and equipped to a very high standard. I really can't find anything negative to say about our stay. Thank you so much Davinia.

All of us from the youngest to the oldest really enjoyed our holiday, especially the lovely garden. We would definitely go back again. Great position for visits to many beautiful locations.

The house is quite isolated, so there aren't any local amenities. Taxis are cheap. But the house is lovely and the owner very friendly and helpful.

A lovely house perfect for the large family party we had and very comfortable apart from the settees in the snug. The grounds are lovely but you do not get exclusive use of them. Overall we enjoyed our holiday.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I’m delighted that this guest and his family enjoyed their stay at Hazel Grove House overall, however I feel is it misleading to suggest that guests do not get exclusive use of the grounds. Admittedly, I and my visitors do need to have access across the front to get to and from my cottage, but the only time anyone - other than the guests in residence - use the garden is myself or anyone helping me for the purpose of maintaining the grounds and gardening. Unfortunately, in a varied and extensive plot of 2 acres, this activity cannot be limited to just changeover days and can, at certain times of the year, be almost a full-time job. We do our best to try and avoid working in areas where guests may be enjoying the outside space but there may be specific tasks when it can’t be avoided, for instance grass cutting.

The house is well located and spotlessly clean. The owner was helpful and very attentive both before our arrival and throughout the stay. The linens were good quality which added a bit of luxury to the property. However I would need to question the overall tag of "luxury " which is attributed to the house. The kitchen/dining area was good although a larger freezer for 12 people would have been more welcome particularly as there is definitely space for one. Our biggest problem was with the lounges. The front lounge was comfortable, but the fact that the wood burner did not work in here was very disappointing. It is a bright room which we could have made more use of if it could have been made more cosy. The TV lounge sofas were uncomfortable and one was so difficult to relax on - very firm and we kept sliding down . Added to this there was a huge tear in one of the arms which was covered by a throw. Many of the cushions were spilling out of the covers, which certainly did not live up to the boast of "luxury" accommodation. This room had more of a residential home feel about it, with the random mix of chairs and sofas. The double bedroom on the second floor had rusty stains on the wall which was unsightly. Overall the house seemed tired with all the dark old furniture. I understand that it is a period property but to claim that it is one of the best places we have stayed would be untrue. Sadly we would not return as there are better properties available in the same price range.
