  • Vicars Hall

    Salisbury

    Grade

    Ref: UKC1002

This superb, Grade II listed, medieval town house dates back to the early 14th century and enjoys a wonderful location. Set within the walled enclave surrounding Salisbury Cathedral, it has direct access to the city centre. It is a surprisingly light and spacious home with an abundance of charm and character, including flagstone floors, exposed brick walls, an Aga and wooden, turning, steep stairs, as well as some low sloping ceilings and beams. The kitchen is spacious and well equipped, leading to the garden/breakfast room with French doors leading to the walled garden which has a patio, sitting out area and various ornamental shrubs and trees sheltering the property. There is a ground floor living/dining room in addition to a spacious first floor family/TV room, three bathrooms and five bedrooms (one of the top floor twin bedrooms has two additional beds for occasional guests or alternative sleeping). There is private parking for 1-2 cars and public parking from £6 per day locally.
Vicar’s Hall, as its name suggests, was reclaimed in the Restoration by the local vicars. Prior to that, the only named owner was William de Chadleshunt, the Archdeacon of Salisbury in 1304.
Malmesbury House, with its famous sundial inscribed with ‘Life’s But a Walking Shadow’, is opposite the property, and adjacent is St Anns Gate. All of the surrounding gates are locked at 11pm each night (owners will supply a key). The author Bill Bryson once commented, ’There is no doubt, in my mind, that Salisbury Cathedral is the single most breathtaking structure in England, and The Close around it is the most beautiful space.’
Salisbury Cathedral draws people from around the world, with its ornate beauty. It also has Britain’s tallest spire, Europe’s oldest clock and one of the original (and best preserved) copies of the Magna Carta. There are various events within the cathedral, including ‘Darkness into Light’, musical services, theatre productions, as well as singing by the choir. Salisbury is a lively, vibrant city with a range of shops, arts, crafts and entertainment, and has a twice weekly charter market. There are lots of eateries, inns and leisure amenities. The train station is about 10 minutes’ walk, for those who prefer a car-free holiday, where there are tour buses to Stonehenge and other local attractions. Visit Old Sarum, an early settlement and an English Heritage Site, and Old Wardour Castle, which is a 14th-century structure set in gardens besides a lake. Within easy driving distance are Stonehenge, Monkey World, The Tank Museum, scenic walks along the Avebury Rings, the Fovant Badges (regimental badges carved into the chalk hills), and the Museum of Army Flying. The New Forest and various beaches, including Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch, are about 45 minutes’ drive. Beach 30 miles. Shop 800 yards, pub and restaurant 300 yards.
