Northern Scotland Cottages

Northern Scotland is an unrivalled mix of culture, history and architecture with a landscape not found anywhere else in this country; if you’re lucky you may get a glimpse of the Northern Lights. You really are in for a treat, dramatic mountains, deep lochs, wonderful coastline and off shore islands, regal towns and villages plus a great choice of self-catering holiday cottages.

Aberdeenshire is between the hills and mountains in the west and the coast on the east stretching from St Cyrus to the Moray Firth, a great place to spot wildlife on land or at sea. The higher land is mainly in Royal Deeside and the stunning Cairngorm National Park. Aberdeen, The Granite City which has benefited from the Oil industry over the years, has wonderful shopping, art and culture.

The Highlands just have to be visited and the incredible scenery will take your breath away. Fort William near Ben Nevis is known as the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’ with just about every outdoor sport going. As you travel through Glen Coe the history and turbulent past will start to envelop you and call in at the visitor centre. The Castles are both magical and chilling, Dunvegan Castle on the Isle of Skye has to be on your list of places to go along with Brodie Castle and the Castle of Mey. A short ferry journey, 8 miles, from John O’ Groats are the Orkney Islands which are the home to Neolithic sites, tall sandstone cliffs and seal colonies. There are preserved villages and houses going back 5,000 years and a chambered burial tomb with Viking carvings.

Finally we have the Outer Hebrides off the west coast, a diverse chain of connected islands that have preserved their own unique way of life. You can travel south from the most northerly point on the Isle of Lewis, through the hills of Harris then the lowlands of the Uists and Benbecula to eventually arrive at Vatersay. On the way you will discover a rich and fascinating Gaelic history as well as amazing wildlife. The choice of outdoor activities is fabulous, the sunsets are memorable and you will want to take some Harris Tweed home with you.

You won’t find anywhere better to go than the Highlands if you want to escape and unwind.
