Another great weekend at the cottage, needs a bit of updating now but you get what you pay for, will definitely be back later in the year.

This is an outdated, poorly finished old property with old tatty brown furniture. The kitchen is well equipped but dirty. There was dirt and salt all along one of the open shelves with pans and things on it. We had to wash every glass, plate and pan before we could use it. The laundry area was filthy with dust and fluff on all surfaces. There was dust on every stair edge and skirting board. There were no towels and the bedding although perfectly clean was very dated. The carpets are from the 1970s and are quite horrendous. There is no wifi which, in this day and age , is quite ridiculous. The property needs a total deep clean, removal of all old furniture especially the filthy childs high chair, the totally unsuitable "hostess trolley", the cheap and tatty side tables and the unnecesssary old wardrobes. The house is spacious and is handy for facilities. It really should be improved as it does not meet the expectations for a 21st Century rental property. If this was meant to be a "clean" house then I suggest you need to speak to your cleaner. I have put similar notes on Booking.com for public reading.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I am sorry you did not find the cottage to your liking and the areas of cleanliness will be addressed with the cleaner. However, she only has a limited time between changeovers and sometimes the cottage is left in a mess which needs to be sorted. Obviously the brown suite was not to your taste but it is not “tatty”. Likewise the brown carpet which although has been there under 20 years (not 40 years as you imply) is steam cleaned twice a year. The dining room carpet was replaced in February this year but I guess not to your taste. The hall, stairs, landing carpet is due to be replaced early next year. There is dishwasher so provided it is used correctly the crockery should be clean. The rest of the furniture is in keeping with a 100+ year old cottage but again obviously not to your taste. We do not advertise towels or Wi-Fi and these are not provided. Overall I am sorry you found the cottage disappointing.

House needs major revamp. Curtains, carpets etc were very dirty and old. We had to wash all the dishes we wanted to use before first use! There were no dishwasher tabs to use the dishwasher! Soap at kitchen sink was empty. Only 1 toilet roll for 3 people for a week! Utility/2nd toilet was a no go area due to dirt! Beds were very uncomfortable. There was no wifi (we had expected this when initial search was done for properties) and there was no EE signal until we got into Aviemore. Stair carpet is very old and threadbare in places. This will soon become a risk to health! Only positive was the location. The area in general is stunning and a lovely walk close by which takes you along the river Spey. Love the area, hate the cottage.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We do not provide any toiletries with the letting and these are not included in the property description. There is a shop across the road which sells soap, dishwasher tablets, toilet rolls, etc. There is also nothing we can do about the poor mobile reception in the village. The carpets were steam cleaned in March this year and the downstairs curtains were washed at the same time. The dinning room carpet was actually replaced in March with a new one. The stair carpet was also steam cleaned in March and is due to be replaced but is a long way from being a health hazard. I will speak to the caretaker regarding cleanliness of the downstairs toilet.

Granite Cottage is a great traditional-style highland cottage. Fantastic location and very comfortable for 2 families. It's clean and everything works fine. It's not been modernised so if you are expecting Ikea furniture you'll be disappointed, but if it had been it would be twice the price! One criticism is that the garden is not fenced so not ideal for young children and dogs. Thanks for a great holiday.

Great area to be in. Slightly disappointed with cleanliness but still had a great time and lady looking after cottage was very helpful.

Lovely cottage, beautiful location, but, cleanliness lets it down. Some areas old fashioned, but, this could be overlooked if the place was clean. Saying that we thoroughly enjoyed our Festive break in the cottage.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Many thanks for your comments and I agree it is a lovely cottage although a bit dated in certain aspects. In January we have changed to a new caretaker/cleaner and cleanliness will improve.

Beautiful location. Lovely cottage, full of character. Not very modern, but has everything you need. Something a bit different with plenty space for 2 families.

The cottage was dirty, covered in black soot/ grime from fireplaces. Couldn't use the living room due to the strong smell of soot in the air. Mouse droppings in the crockery. Gas heating didn't work properly so was cold at night.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner:- I am sorry you didn't find the cottage acceptable but any complaints should have been made immediately to the caretaker who lives opposite and could have rectified them. The cottage is over 100 years old and has two open fire places so it inevitable that there may be some ash in the grate as they are regularly used by our guests. There is no gas connected to the cottage and the oil fired boiler is on a maintenance contract and any fault with the heating could have been rectified if it had been reported at the time.

A Nice, roomy cottage a short drive away from most local attractions. A bit dated in places and there were areas which could have been cleaner. We felt that some essentials (e.g. Coffee, Milk, toilet roll) were lacking on arrival, but was remedied on a trip to the local shop. Otherwise we largely enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming again.
