South Wales

South Wales includes four wonderful and very different areas, Carmarthenshire, Glamorgan, Monmouthshire and Pembrokeshire. All unique and offering a massive variety of things to do and see with a great choice of self-catering holiday cottages.

Carmarthenshire is home to Cardiff, the country’s capital and a hub for Welsh culture, sport, entertainment, first class shopping plus the striking Wales Millennium Centre arts complex in Cardiff Bay. The city also has 10% less rain and 10% more sunshine than the rest of Wales and as they say ‘every little bit helps’. Follow the Taff Trail north to the hills and moorlands of the Brecon Beacons. If you want sun, sea and sand head for the resorts of Barry Island and Porthcawl both with lovely coastal countryside and a back drop of green hills. This is a beautiful and varied landscape with visitor attractions, festivals and events, historic sites plus gastro pubs and restaurants serving wonderful local food and drink.

If you want vast green spaces ideal for walking and mountain biking, valleys with stories to tell about their history and industrial heritage plus some wonderful museums and the largest castle in Wales, head for Glamorgan, often thought to be the heart and soul of Wales. The Heritage Coastal Path stretching from Porthcawl to Aberthaw will delight walkers with glorious views and a real mix of wildlife, hence its special conservation status.

A large part of Monmouthshire an AONB attracting walkers, mountain bikers, horse riders and canoeists. Famous poets and artists have been captivated by the beauty of steep woods, lofty cliffs, a lush green landscape and the Wye Valley, all unspoilt and enchanting as ever. The history is diverse, legend has it that King Arthur once ruled but Romans and Normans did settle and pilgrims did come to worship. Today you will find grapes growing, salmon leaping, a rich culture and vibrant market towns; Abergavenny is a lovely town which hosts an annual food festival, possibly the best artisan food market in the UK.

Pembrokeshire in the south west corner is known around the world for it breath taking coastal scenery protected by Britain’s only coastal National Park. Follow the 186 mile coastal path for a walk you will never forget, golden sandy beaches and lofty cliffs all teeming with wildlife. There’s a massive variety of outdoor activities to choose from including surfing, coasteering, climbing or diving or even rock pooling. There are adventure parks, castles and boat trips, something for everyone. One place you must visit is St David’s, truly delightful and Britain’s smallest city with unique shops, pubs and restaurants offering you a warm traditional Welsh welcome.
