Liguria extends in an arc from the French border, hugging the Ligurian Sea to beyond Genoa. Discover charming and picturesque ports, a rocky coastline interrupted by beautiful sandy beaches and small coves all with a backdrop of rising mountains and rolling hills. It’s a most enticing location for your villa in Italy; for self catering accommodation see our collection of villas in Liguria.

Liguria, equally referred to as the Italian Riviera, is in north west Italy and offers the perfect mix of modern amenities and both natural and man-made beauty, along with a warm Mediterranean climate.

The principal city in the region is Genoa, one of Italy’s most atmospheric cities with a rich maritime history and the country''s largest naval and commercial port. It has a fascinating old quarter with narrow alleyways, some exquisite 16th century architecture and beautiful palaces of the Renaissance. It also has a renowned aquarium; one of the best in Europe.

Genoa stands between two very distinct areas of coastline known as the Riviera di Ponente and the Riviera di Levante.

Riviera di Ponente lies to the west of Genoa and is a popular tourist destination. Sanremo, a major flower exporter, boasts an array of glasshouses, and nearby Noli and Albenga are medieval centres with an abundance of character and charm. For a true Mediterranean seaside feel, head to Finale Ligure, with its palm tree-lined promenade, array of restaurants, white sandy beaches and spectacular views.

Riviera di Levante is a more rugged and includes a number of villages well worth visiting. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty which feels wild in places whilst being very far from remote. Portofino is an upmarket resort and fishing village with an extremely picturesque harbour famous for attracting celebrities and visitors like. Nearby Santa Margherita Ligure has a castle dating back to 1550 and the Basilica of St Margaret of Antiochia, which sits on the site of a church dates from the 13th century.

Apart from the beautiful coastline and the many watersports on offer here, visitors will discover a hinterland of mountains, rolling fields, valleys and lakes which are just perfect for walking.

To enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery Italy has to offer, take to the Cinque Terre for a dramatic coastal walk through vineyards and scrubland and to take in the sheer enormity of its jutting headlands and head-spinning gulfs. The route links five picturesque fishing villages.
