Dating back to the 1700s, this exceptional cottage has been furnished to an impressively high standard throughout, creating a luxurious base for families, couples, and friends seeking a peaceful riverside escape in the picturesque village of Briggswath.
Set beside the gentle River Esk, which winds its way toward the historic coastal town of Whitby, the cottage enjoys an enviable position. From the tiered garden that leads down to the water’s edge, you can relax on the patio or lawned area and take in views of the heritage steam train chugging past in the summer months, travelling between Whitby and Pickering across the moors. The river itself is a favourite spot for paddleboarders and rowers, with boat, kayak, and SUP hire available in the neighbouring village, perfect for guests wanting to get out on the water.
Inside, the stone-flagged ground floor boasts a spacious, open-plan living area designed for both style and comfort. Concertina glass doors open directly into the enclosed garden, allowing you to blend indoor and outdoor living seamlessly on sunny days. The kitchen features beautiful wooden worktops, modern appliances, and a central dining table ideal for shared meals. A large corner sofa sits beneath exposed beams, creating an inviting space to unwind.
A separate snug offers a cosy hideaway, complete with a three-piece leather Chesterfield suite, a selection of board games, and a large Smart TV, perfect for quiet evenings in after days spent exploring. The ground floor also includes a convenient toilet and a practical utility room.
The first floor has two well-presented king bedrooms along with a stylish family bathroom, while the top floor is home to the master king bedroom. This impressive room includes an en-suite shower and a Juliet balcony overlooking the river, offering a tranquil place to greet the morning or enjoy the last light of day.
Briggswath itself is a charming village with a Victorian tea room, a garden centre, and a scenic footbridge leading to the friendly local pub, ideal for a leisurely evening stroll. Just three miles away is Whitby, one of Yorkshire’s most beloved seaside towns. Famous for its dramatic abbey ruins that inspired Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Whitby offers sandy beaches, atmospheric cobbled streets, independent shops, and award-winning seafood restaurants. Visitors can explore the bustling harbour, climb the iconic 199 Steps, or enjoy boat trips along the coast. With its mix of history, heritage, and natural beauty, Whitby makes the perfect complement to your stay at Wren Cottage.
Please note: There are open, steep, spiral or narrow stairs at the property.
