Enjoyed our weekend in the peaceful cottage and lovely cottage garden. Dog owners, the garden is shared with the owner who ocassionally uses the house next door. It's such a lovely garden with seating areas so don't let that put you off.

Lovely peaceful location and amazing to take your dogs too. I can’t remember the last time I slept so well and the owners were so welcoming and accommodating. Will 100% be going back soon.

Good things first. Bathroom and kitchen were clean and, after a problem with the cooker the emergency phone contact, think they were the cleaners, came straight round. Cumbria/ the lakes are beautiful and even raining all the time were amazing as always. Now the bad, the garden, the main reason we chose Woodburn, was unkempt with overflowing outside bins. We understand that we had an amazing hot summer but there were dead flowers and plants everywhere. The front room was not clean either. We had seen, on previous reviews, that it smelt of dogs, and thought that it was unreasonable but it didn't feel like it had been cleaned since the last visit. There was dust and dead spiders, and bugs, all over the place. Upstairs in the front bedroom was a lare amount of mold in the corner of the room as well as mold under the window. The mold in the corner was huge. Under the windows had probably been treated and just painted over. The back bedroom was ok but with no storage. Finally the information needed updating. We went to the pub in the village to eat and they hadn't done food for 6 months. Very disappointed and don't feel that the cottage was worth the money we spent on it.

Sorry to say we decided to leave a day early. The cottage was clean but with an occasional doggy ‘odour’. Very disappointed with the garden which was unkempt and the garden furniture shabby and dirty. Clarification of the garden boundary would have been useful also. Wi-Fi was unobtainable even though our devices stated otherwise. No signal. Had to walk 200 yards to the community centre for a phone signal (disconcerting had an emergency arisen). The stated on-road parking was hit and miss, this was unfortunate as my sister has limited mobility and I had to park in the community centre…….too far for her to walk. I did try on three occasions to call the local contact name and number as stated on my information sheet , to no avail. There was also no welcome pack as stated by other visitors in the reviews. Not sure if this ‘gift’ has been discontinued as nothing noted in the info. May I suggest it be stated that this cottage is not suitable for folk with physical disability minor or otherwise. Lovely for walkers and rambles. 3 star only.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Sorry Woodburn disappointed you on this occasion. Unfortunately we were abroad on holiday when you visited the Cottage. I did try to make contact by email and phone prior to your stay, to explain that we were not able, on this occasion, to leave our normal welcome pack and also to offer the use of the next door cottage drive for off road parking. This is a courtesy we offer to all our guests. The phone signal and Wi-Fi can be a little unreliable in the area as the Cottage sits at the foot of the fells. Normally phones all work fine when fairly close to the cottage. Mine is certainly OK in the cottage, garden and outside near the road. This is the first time I have heard of anyone needing to go that far to get a signal, but I suppose it will depend on the device and service providers. I understand this must have been inconvenient. I am really surprised that the garden disappointed you as it normally elicits a very positive response from guests. As it is a very natural Lakeland garden we do not try to keep it particularly neat and tidy, we just try to keep it "under control” and perhaps the recent weather and our absence had made it a little more "lush" than normal. The garden boundary is described in the information pack provided and we have recently added some more garden chairs. There are also three other garden benches in the grounds, but I appreciate that these may not have been suitable for a person with mobility issues. I'm really sorry that in the circumstances you did not find Woodburn suitable, and regret not being able to make contact, which I'm sure would have helped you.
