Ideally placed for seaside and countryside

Westgate Cottage is a charming 17th century stone built holiday cottage located in the picturesque village of St Lawrence, at the southernmost tip of the island. This delightful detached home, awarded four stars by Visit Britain, nestles in a peaceful location within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, making it ideal for those wishing to explore the countryside and many coastal walks. Originally the local coach house with stables and accommodation for visitors, there are still remnants of a bygone age, with lashing points for the horses and cobbled pathways. The secure gated walled garden provides an ideal area for children and pets. The village has a local post office and store, and popular unspoilt Steephill Cove, cricket club and splendid Botanical Gardens are all close by. The Victorian seaside resort of Ventnor has an esplanade where freshly caught fish, crab and lobster can be purchased. Other places of interest include Isle of Wight Glass, St. Boniface Down, or further afield The Needles, Carisbrook Castle and Osborne House. For the outdoor enthusiast, golf, scenic walks within miles of stunning coastline, riding, cycling, hang-gliding and sailing can all be found nearby. Shop 0.5 miles, pub and restaurant 1.5 miles.

Westgate cottage is a lovely secluded cottage, and full of the correct amenities. My rating of 7 is because we were unaware of a few things until we arrived. One is that the cottage has a Septic tank. There are notices up at windows re a big drop from the windows, and that there is a large unsecured pond/lake at the bottom. There are many reminders to you to keep your children safe, but I would have liked to have known before I made the decision to book. There is also a note that you can only put the immersion on for 1 hour at a time, so it's best to have showers (electric) rather than a bath.

We had a lovely stay at Westgate cottage. The property has everything you need to have a really relaxing holiday. We especially loved the massive living room and games for the kids. The big dvd collection also really made our break. The only improvements I would have liked would for the kitchen to have a really deep clean as it was a bit sticky and the cooker struggles with hobs being on and oven which made it a lengthy process to cook dinner. We'd definitely recommend to families.

A rundown, damp smelling house, broken window pane, broken light which blew the trip switch as seems to have a broken bulb jammed in it, Liquidizer poured boiling liquid over my arm (seal missing), broken glass in filter of dirty dishwasher that we cleaned out, broken door of clothes drier had to be propped closed with chair, broken sofa simply moved around when we reported it, outside lifts not working, torches not working and batteries replaced on request asking with with out toaster, work out topped lampshade, stained headboards, inadequate cleaning, stained damp wallpaper, toilet not working properly, toilet seat need fixing, could go on and on......

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I can only apologise for the issues you experienced during your recent stay. Unfortunately, some previous guests had broken the sofa, window, toilet, lights, etc. as well as removing light bulbs and batteries. As you were moved last minute from the property you were previously in due to the issues there, we hadn’t realised that these things had happened before your arrival. We did try to fix everything we possibly could once you reported it, but some of these things just weren’t an immediate fix I’m afraid. Obviously, getting a new sofa immediately was not an option, so my cleaner moved the sofa for you and replaced it with the spare sofa so that you had ample seating round the TV area for your stay. We did let the agent know that this was the quickest solution and to let you now that’s what would be done in the short term. She also replaced the toaster and batteries in the torches. Everything else has now either been fixed of is awaiting the tradesperson to fix next week. When I heard about the damp from the agent, I immediately suggested that you be moved to a different property, which I assume they relayed to you, as I didn’t want you or your party becoming ill during your stay. None of this excuses what you had to endure, I just wanted to ensure that you knew why some of these things had happened and that I was trying to fix as much as possible while you were there.
