Waitby School was built on Waitby Fell in 1680 by James Highmore, a local to the area, for the children of Waitby and Smardale. About a mile and a half west of Kirkby Stephen, Waitby is said to have been an ancient market town, with a castle, chapel and cemetery, but no trace of either is now to be seen. However, the school remains, standing proud on the fellside and, having been purchased recently by another local family, has been lovingly restored, in conjunction with English Heritage, to offer luxurious holiday accommodation. The property stands alone and enjoys uninterrupted views over the surrounding countryside, dotted with livestock and the occasional farmer and tractor at "doin up time".
Many original features have been retained in the restoration of the School, including wood panelling, wooden double doors, the outside boys lavatory, complete with seat, and, of course, the school bell. After much careful planning, these characterful features have been successfully combined with state of the art fixtures and fittings to create and individual holiday home of great distinction, and a most unique holiday experience. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

We had a lovely stay at Waitby School. It’s in a beautiful rural location but you can easily get to Kirkby Stephen for shops & other facilities & to use the Settle to Carlisle railway to explore further afield. The property was well equipped, except for the kettle which was tiny & a tray would have been useful. But these were minor issues & most of all, we loved the peace & quiet & being able to walk from the door in various directions & distances. It’s a property that’s high on our list for a return visit.

A lovely place to stay in the most gorgeous setting. Sadly let down by cleanliness issues (cobwebs in multiple locations and the most obnoxious smell coming from the fridge every time the door was opened). The underfloor heating was okay but we were glad of the solid fuel stove (free access to the log store was a Godsend). The beds were wonderfully comfortable and the TV/Sky package was great along with the super selection of DVDs. Oh, the kettle was minute (okay for the two of us but not for four adults). On the first morning of our stay, I sent an email to the owners to let them know that one of the dining chairs almost collapsed when I sat on it as one of the legs was very unstable (to date, I’ve not had a reply). So to summarise, a lovely location and property but in need of some attention.

Our second stay at this cottage, so we knew what to expect. Lovely location, isolated enough, but just 2 miles from Kirkby Stephen. Lots of walks from the door. Generally done out to high spec, especially the sound system in lounge brought our dvd nights to life! Main two bedrooms well appointed with dedicated bathrooms. However. The third bedroom is at the other end of the house, and has three single beds; no door; and sadly this time, no access to the toilet off the kitchen which was 'out of order'! Great for older kids or adults, but less good for toddlers or infants. We were aware of this, so planned accordingly! Log fire was a big plus, with free access to logs for which we were grateful. Thank you. Wifi was generally good, but dropped occasionally. No big problem for us. Underfloor heating in the big lounge meant could take a while to warm up of an evening, but log fire helped a lot. Overall, had really good week, and sure we'll be back again! Thanks.
