Scottish Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

A larger holiday property for a family or group of friends to enjoy the myriad activities, or simply relax and enjoy the views.

In a superb location with wonderful views towards Loch Linnhe, the Caledonian Canal, Fort William and the surrounding mountains, this spacious house, one of a pair, adjoins the owners’ seldom used holiday apartment and offers an ideal base for discovering the west coast of Scotland. The holiday property is decorated with a Christmas theme during the festive season.
The area is renowned for its outdoor pursuits, breathtaking scenery and abundant wildlife. Known as the ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’, activities include mountain biking, climbing, skiing, kayaking, walking, golf and fishing. Take a trip on the gondola up Aonach Mor or try the World Championship mountain bike course. For outdoor enthusiasts who like a challenge, why not take on Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain. On a clear day, the view is spectacular and you can see for miles. For steam train enthusiasts, catch the West Highland Steam Train to Mallaig, crossing the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct which featured in the Harry Potter films, (or watch it from the garden as it puffs past the house daily during the summer months). Alternatively, visit some of the unspoilt beaches, historic castles, museums, distilleries and magnificent gardens.
Boat trips to the inner isles are easily accessible, including Mull with its main, colourful, harbourside town, Tobermoray, also known as Balamory in the children’s TV series, Staffa and the cathedral like Fingal’s Cave, and Iona with its pristine white sands and famous abbey. Torfern is also ideally placed for touring with the bustling harbour town of Oban, Aviemore for winter sports, Inverness, Skye or monster spotting at Loch Ness all easily reached. Shop and pub 200 yards.

This house is fantastic. A great size with amazing views. We watched all 4 seasons in one day through the patio doors, the steam train pass twice daily and the top of Ben Nevis, all from the sofa! A short walk to the sea lock and to the local shop for essentials. A brilliant base for exploring the Highlands. The arrangements were excellent and the owners really friendly.

Response on behalf of the owner; Your review has left us feeling quite humbled; thank you so much for your positive comments and the 10 score. Unfortunately, the Scottish weather is one thing over which we have no control - but we are delighted that you enjoyed your holiday in Torfern. Thank you again.

Fantastic holiday home with everything you could possibly need. Views from the patio were stunning. Well stocked supermarket one minute walk away. Didn’t try the local pubs as they did look a bit run down but plenty of nice pubs and restaurants within a short drive.

A superb spacious house with large garden in great location with lovely views and walks alongside the Caledonian canal. All amenities close to hand with a small Co-op just to the rear and larger stores a short distance away inFort William. The house is very well presented, very clean and has everything a large family needs, including loads of space, inside and out. Absolutely superb. The only reason it didn’t score a 10 in every section is that some of the kitchen equipment is damaged or missing. The wok has been damaged and cannot be safely used. The oven tins are similarly inferior and need replacing. Some of the glasses are missing and/or mis-matched. The owners telephone in the attached cottage also rang on numerous occasions and went unanswered. If these matters are addressed in this quality property I’m sure it would score 10 for everything. This is the place if you want space, views, quality accommodation, local amenities and accessibility to Ben Nevis, Loch Ness, Highland Wildlife Park, canal walks etc. There’s too much to do in this area in a week’s stay. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone as one of the best places to go.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your most helpful comments and we are pleased that you had a good stay in Torfern. You will be pleased to know that all the baking trays have been replaced with new ones. Regarding our unanswered telephone - despite registering our number with the Telephone Preference Service, we continue to be plagued with calls from companies trying to get us to replace our boiler or install double glazing. We have now unplugged the phone.

We have had an epic holiday, the house was perfect and the location easy to get to places we wanted to see. Our family from New Zealand appreciated everything. We even saw a whale in the loch one evening, as the local children were jumping into the loch, but quickly aborted their play when the whale appeared. the garden of the house was perfect to play in

We had stayed twice before (says it all really) and so knew what to expect. The home is lovely with all mod cons and especially great views of the loch and Ben Nevis. Plenty of great walks nearby. Good co-op. Big M&S foodhall and large supermarkets nearby. We had 8 + dogs and it did not feel crowded. Large garden helped.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you, we hope Torfern is starting to feel like home from home.
