Pleasant surprise Thank you so much for a wonderful stay. After reading previous reviews, we booked with some reservations. But we had a pleasant surprise! Kitchen and bathroom facilities were spot on, bedrooms and living area were comfy and cozy. Particularly liked the corner bath, the character of the place and its location was key! Kitchen spacious and well equipped, views from upper storeys were great and such is the wonderful character of Staithes, everything was on a gradient! Highly recommended.

I visited this cottage with my wife and two children aged 10 & 6. The cottage was ok. Being located just off the high street so it was quite quiet but this made it more awkward to unload/load. There seems to have been a distinct lack on investment at this cottage. There is still no mirror in the bedroom (even though a review a year ago suggested these would be added). Towels were provided but there weren’t many of them so these were rather smelly towards the end of the week. The stairs are extremely old but they are extremely creaky. This needs some attention as the nail heads in the floorboards are sticking up in places and my son cut his foot on one of them. One of the single beds on the top floor has two plastic fittings missing from one of the slats, as a result my wife sat down and fell through the bed and bruised her arm. This could be easily remedied. The wardrobe on the top floor wobbled considerably on the uneven floor so could do with something adding beneath one of the feet to make it more secure (particularly as children are likely to be staying in this room). The stairs are quite steep and some of the ceilings/doorways are low so I would recommend this cottage for people over 6ft tall. The kitchen facilities weren’t great, a lot needed cleaning before using. There were three saucepans of differing sizes but none were very big. I had to use two saucepans to cook some spaghetti for a family of four. The beds and sofas were reasonably comfortable. The information provided before arrival was sufficient but there was a lack of information in the welcome pack. It states that the rubbish should be put out on bin days but it doesn’t state when this is or where the bin is located. Again this would be easily rectified. As the radiators are heated by the solid fuel fire we had a few attempts at heating the radiators without any success. We tried using the pre prepared fire that was ready on arrival but also a fire I made which was happily still going 6-7 hours later but the radiators didn’t warm up to dry the towels. We did turn on the water pump too. We regularly had to keep turning on the immersion heater to get hot water but this did warm up quickly. We parked at Glen Vale Car Park which was quite good, this is only a short walk from the cottage albeit up some rather steep steps. However, I think it is much easier to go up the steps at the rear of the cottage than up the steep hill in the village. We wouldn’t return to this cottage. We booked this at short notice and was one of only two available cottages at the time. We’ve been to Staithes several times and have found better cottages including dishwashers, parking, Wi-Fi and sea views etc., for a very similar price. Staithes itself is a lovely place, the people are very friendly, it isn’t very commercial so it is great to wind down and have some family time. We spent a day a Whitby and two days at Sandsend beach. We walked to Port Mulgrave following the Cleveland trial which was really nice. I would recommend the Cod & Lobster, Hill Top Café, cobble cake at the Seadrift Café and of course the ice-creams at the beach.
