Description

After a day exploring the North York Moors National Park, relax in the garden room with a drink.

Tucked away in a rural setting within the North York Moors National Park, The Wheelhouse enjoys glorious views and makes a lovely holiday home with enjoyable walks from the door. The property has been carefully restored to combine a wealth of traditional features, such as exposed stonework and an unusually spacious garden room that was formerly the wheelhouse for horses threshing corn. The Wheelhouse is just a couple of miles from the pretty village of Swainby and well placed for visiting the market town of Thirsk and surrounding ‘Herriot Country’. A little further afield is the north east coast with its quaint fishing villages and Whitby where popular Whitby Abbey stands majestically on the headland above the traditional working harbour. For the energetic there is good surfing at Saltburn. The North York Moors and Heartbeat country provide stunning scenery and are wonderful for touring. Shops and pub 2½ miles.

Spacious living/dining room with French doors and oak floor, arch to well-equipped breakfast kitchen with oak floor. Snug/TV room. Separate toilet. First floor: Double bedroom. Twin bedroom with zip & link beds. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

We had a great holiday over Xmas in this lovely house. Owner even arranged for Xmas tree and decorations for us. Its a beautiful and slightly remote location - off the beaten track. We even got snowed in for a day which we really enjoyed. I would think about a 4WD car if you are visiting in winter!

The Wheel House is a comfortable and spacious property. It enjoys a beautiful and quiet location on the edge of the North York Moors with scope for local rambling as well as being a base for venturing further afield. It did feel a bit 'end of season' - exterior woodwork needs some care and some of the (numerous) blinds are missing pull cords or are patterned with dead flies. We also had several visits from someone fitting a new fridge freezer - perfectly polite and tidy but the kind of thing you expect at home rather than accommodating on holiday. The local shop in Swainby has also closed since the information in the cottage was last updated - you will need to bring a stock of provisions or drive further afield to buy them in. That explains why I haven't been overly generous with my scoring but it was, nonetheless, an excellent place for a break and one I'd consider again.
