The owners of the cottage could not have been more helpful and we enjoyed the cream tea on arrival. Having relatives in central Tavistock we felt too far away from them (should have taken more notice of the position of the cottage before finally booking) No local amenities was a bit of a downside to us. We thought there was a garden immediately attached to the cottage.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We were saddened to learn, that on reflection you had chosen the wrong location for your holiday. We are only 6 miles/10 minutes drive from Tavistock and situated on Dartmoor but you would have preferred to stay in the town. We were also sorry that you had not fully read the description of our facilities which explains the garden is 40 yards up the lane from the property. 40 yards down the lane leads you to our 3 acre woodland, ideal for those visitors with a dog to exercise.

The Smithy is a small cottage but has everything you need for your stay. There are lots of extras provided, thick soft towels, hand and shower gels, there are extra heaters in all the rooms if you need them though the heating was adequate for us, there is even an electric blanket. The kitchen is very well equipped although small. We were greeted by the very friendly owners on arrival, with a cream tea and a huge bowl of flowers from their garden. The cottage is in a very quiet beautiful area, on a lane that leads onto the moor. The owners have a large beautiful garden that they encourage you to use. All in all a lovely warm comfortable cottage.

Beautiful isolated location, hence the score for amenities. But that was why we went, cottage was warm and spotlessly clean. Had everything you could need, proper little home from home. Hosts were welcoming and gave good suggestions for days out, would definitely recommend it to anyone.

I had a lovely weekend at The Smithy. Sally was really helpful with showing me where everything was in the cottage and how it worked before leaving me to it. The cottage has all the cooking utensils and basic necessities (e.g. washing up liquid, tea, coffee, sugar, milk, cooking oil) so you don’t have to worry about bringing them with you. Its very clean and pleasant to stay in. The location made it feel like a real break from it all. I would definitely stay there again.

We spent Christmas here and found it to be very cosy, warm and quite, just as we wanted, did not have to use the car. Walking is relatively easy with the moors adjacent within a quarter of a mile down the lane. The Smithy is well equipped and ideal for two plus a dog

We had a great time at the Smithy - we love walking and cycling and open access to the moor is just down the road from the cottage. We had five days at the Smithy and went walking or cycling from the cottage door on 4 of the 5 days! The cottage is warm, comfortable and well-equipped and the friendly and helpful owners live just up the road if you need them. Good shops in Okehampton and Tavistock for all supplies. We hope to return.

We spent a lovely week at The Smithy 2 weeks ago and were very lucky with the weather as the cottage is right on the edge of the moor. The owners were just so nice - friendly, welcoming and helpful. We couldn't have asked for more!! If you want a charming cottage to spend some peaceful time in then go to The Smithy! That's why people keep on going back.
