We had a fantastic holiday at The Sanctuary. I took my 3 kids aged 15, 14 and 10 and a 6 year old niece. It was a last minute booking so i was a little worried i might of chosen a bad holiday given all my friends laughed when i said id spent over £2000 on a holiday in Ashford! #PanicBuy sprung to mind After a particularly bad year we really needed a good holiday. I never had a lot of time to book and given that the weather had been bad all summer and was predicted to stay like that it was about being clever. As a family we don't really enjoy travelling abroad unless its rural France or Spain, and we prefer to rent holiday homes as opposed to Hotels/Appartments etc. So i contacted the met office and asked them where they thought the sunniest part of the UK would be on the dates we travelled, which was just under a month away. The answer was Ashford in Kent. I set about looking for a large house near Ashford with the following criteria. 1. Swimming Pool 2. Hot Tub 3. Games Room 4. Large Garden 5. Peaceful Location I did not expect to find anywhere given it was less then a month to we travelled but fortunately The Sanctuary popped up on the search engine. After reading the reviews i had my doubts and i could clearly understand peoples reticence about booking based on reviews alone. I decided would take a chance and book. Being a huge football fan it did somewhat seem like i had just partaken in a last minute deadline day transfer on a previously talented but injury prone player as opposed to booking a family holiday but with my usual in for a penny attitude i decided we would have a good holiday no matter what the reviewers had said. And boy did we do that! On arrival we were greeted by Tony and Helen who live next door in a cottage within the grounds. They could not have done enough for us and nothing seemed too much trouble. I have stayed in homes where you are expected to read manuals on how to use appliances etc, and have spent stressful hours attempting to work cookers and washing machines etc. Not here at The Sanctuary. Helen was quick to show us how the cooker worked. The dishwasher and was hinging machine and dryer were simplicity in itself. Tony gave us a tour of the House and its near 5 acres of grounds and i must say i was pleasantly surprised. Given the reviews stating the home was dirty. I found it nothing of the sort. This is a big home in the country. I expected spiders and webs, and if i looked close enough i found them but criticise because of it? No i don't think so. Sure i have stayed in lots of plush homes with the best quality furnishings and fittings but at them homes which feel like show homes i feel uncomfortable. Too afraid to move for spoiling something. Here at The Sanctuary the we all felt very comfortable and very much at home, which is surely what you want from a holiday? Ill do my best to describe the home because we all have different standards and tastes and its only fair to give others looking at reviews the opportunity to consider it as a holiday destination. I appreciate this home would not suit everybody but it suited us. There is a large area for parking at the front of the house. Then you enter the house in to a large hallway which is a good place to change out of wet clothes and take off muddy boots should that of been needed (It wasn't in our case). The hallway leads in to the auxiliary room ahead, The small long but perfectly functional kitchen is to the left, and to the right is the entrance to the Sauna. There is also another bedroom here but its no longer used. The sauna has a shower and toilet. The sauna is a little dated as is the shower but it did the job and we spent most days in there. It is operated by a coin metre. and takes £1 coins. As i say we were in there most days and never once needed to put any money in as there was sufficient already on the metre. There are nice views from the window in the sauna room. The Kitchen looks on to the front of the house and drive. Leading off from the kitchen you have the large living room which in turn leads outside to the garden. The living room has an open fire which we never used and a small bar which is stocked with some drink. Im sure people who stay leave what they advent consumed for the next visitors. The room has quite dark wood panelling which gives the high ceilinged room a cosy feel which was very nice when we settled down in the evenings. There is a large TV and DVD player which we used one night to have a 'Film Night'. Leading off of the Living Room is another large hallway and a lovely grand staircase that lead up to the bedrooms. Off of the hallway is The Dining Room which was already laid out. We spent most days in here having real good quality family time. It was personally one of my favourite rooms. With views on to the front and back of the house t really was a nice place to sit and eat. The hallway has a large cupboard filled with toys and games, and the living room has a vast array of books should you have forgotten to take your kindle. There is also a downstairs Loo. Upstairs all the bedrooms were clean and tidy. 3 Bedrooms. A Double, A Twin and A Single. I found the beds to be comfortable but i think beds are a personal taste so its not easy to review. The bedding was a bit mismatched and could probably do with updating. I am sure some people would suggest the beds could be updated too, but again there was very little complaints from my gang. All the rooms were en-suite. The heating is controlled by a thermastat in the hallway. The plumbing is ok. The hot water takes a few moments to come through but that is perfectly acceptable in my eyes. The locks on the doors take a little bit of understanding, especially for kids who are used to turning knobs or lifting handles. One of the boys got stuck in the loo. There was nothing wrong with the lock, he just could'nt quite work out what to do to open the door. He actually climbed out the window much to the amusement of the rest of the family! The toilets go in to a sceptic tank and need flushing 5 or 6 times, but they do work. This leads us on to the outside. Beautiful gardens that are well looked after. If you like nature as we do then you will love it. Surrounded by trees and green everywhere. Just beautiful. Watching stunning sunsets from anywhere in the garden was the best part of the day for me. There is a lovely little space to the side of the house where i sat and had my morning coffee. With a table and chairs it is a lovely little part of the garden to sit away from it all and chillax. Walking around the garden takes 15-25 minutes and is lovely. There are swings for the kids, a tree swing can also be found. Some football goals and a set of bowls which we used most days for a game. There is a net which we used for badminton most days. All the equipment was there like raquctes and shuttlecocks etc. Then there is the swimming pool which is a short walk from the house. Surrounded by apple trees it is simply lovely. We spent all day from early morning to the evening in the pool. Heated enough but can be raised if you ask Tony. 6ft deep at one end about 3ft the other. Steps to walk in to. (Last step down is a bit steep mind) not sure of the exact measurements but must be 10 metres x 6 metres. We took along with us water floats water beds and pool games such as water volley ball but I'm not sure you need too. we just wanted that extra bit of comfort. We had good weather ( i will take some credit here for sourcing out the met office for their advice) It was good advice too. We all got sunburnt which was unbelievable given the weather around the country at the time. From the pool you can watch lots of birds flying around if you are a bit of a twitcher. Up in the sky you can watch the gliders flying which is really relaxing. There is a BBQ which we used a few times. Again Tony was on hand to show us how to light it. The Games room with its vintage snooker table was a hub of activity everyday. There is a large dining table in there which we used every night to play various board games. There are two toilets in there too. If you a looking for a pristine home with up to date gadgetry and everything matching and the home to be immaculate and spick and span then this is probably not for you, but if like us you want to feel at home in lovely warm cozy surroundings, Where you feel safe and at peace then i could not recommend this place any higher. It really was one of the nicest weeks i have spent anywhere and i the only thing stopping me re booking at the moment is because I'm not sure i could get a better week here then I've just recently had. If you book i am sure you will have as fabulous time as we did. Happy Holidays Stu and the gang x
