The Oval is set in the heart of the beautiful village of Dunster, an idyllic location. This quirky, medieval terraced cottage was built in the winter of 1366 according to Channel 4’s ‘The Time Team’, and is one of the oldest private houses in the village. It has been sympathetically restored and furnished to a high standard to retain its truly unique character and charm. The spacious living room boasts a 16th-century wooden screen and large feature fireplace. With two comfortable sofas and an armchair, it is the perfect place to relax and listen to the crackling of the wood burner. Opposite this room is The Snug, the ideal place to read and plan outings, play games or do a jigsaw. At the end of the hallway, you’ll find the dining room, utility room (with Sanilav toilet) and large, well-equipped country-style kitchen. Accessed from the kitchen or dining room is a pretty courtyard area with seating. Higher up, steep steps lead the way to a sun deck that offers views of the surrounding countryside. Upstairs all three bedrooms have Hypnos and hotel-standard mattresses, as well as high-quality bedding, linen and towels. There’s a master bedroom with the wow factor - an antique four-poster bed, large cruck beams and en-suite shower room which can also be accessed off the landing. There’s also a pretty double with en-suite facilities (Sanilav toilet) and high beams, and a twin with views to the garden. Child and dog friendly, the cottage is Four Star Gold rated by VisitEngland.
If you’re coming to the area as a large party, this property forms part of a group with The Old Sweet Shop (ref UKC3164), Stone Barn (ref UKC3594) and Pilgrim Corner (ref EWQ), just minutes away in Minehead.
This really is the perfect location as everything is on your doorstep. Dunster is in the Exmoor National Park, and the medieval village is one of the most famous and photographed on Exmoor with its picturesque setting and historical high street. You’ll be spoilt for choice for dining options too with award-winning restaurants, pubs, cafés and tea rooms. Head up the hill to visit the National Trust castle and working water mill, or through the village for ancient dovecote buildings and a beautiful church. At the seafront, there are chalets on Dunster beach and views over the Bristol Channel to Wales.
Walk from the front door of The Oval straight into Exmoor National Park, perfect for walks with or without dogs, or explore the stunning Exmoor countryside in a unique way by taking a steam trip on the West Somerset Railway. It can be boarded in Dunster or Minehead, the start of the line. This town also boasts a large sandy beach and some lovely shops, pubs and restaurants. Blue Anchor is a short drive away, perfect for a walk along the coastline and with a great café. Drive up the coast to the popular harbour town of Watchet, 15 minutes away. Porlock is 15 minutes in the other direction, with its famous Weir and interesting array of shops, pubs and tearooms. If you want to head further afield, you’re close to North Devon, with Lynton and Lynmouth 20 minutes away on the scenic A39. Exmoor is sprinkled with beautiful villages, stunning scenery and wildlife, attractive towns and charming harbours and is a perfect retreat for families and friends. Beach 1½ miles. Pub 20 yards, delicatessen 200 yards. Guests receive a copy of the owner’s own walking book with plenty of suggestions of places to visit and treks of all lengths.
