Old Boathouse Lodge is an incredible property, located at the southern tip of Cumbria in the heart of the South Walney Nature Reserve. Surrounded by wildlife and with incredible, panoramic sea views it’s the perfect location for a memorable getaway. The cottage is split into the main three-bedroom house on one side and ’The Hide’ – a one-bedroom annexe – on the other. The Hide has its own separate kitchen and living space, making Old Boathouse Lodge the perfect choice for multi-generational families where the parents or grandparents can have their own space.
The nature reserve is windswept and rugged and home to a wonderful diversity of bird species. Grey seals can also be spotted swimming in the sea at high tide! The sunrises and sunsets are simply stunning and guests will love the experience of being immersed in nature.
Inside, the cottages do not disappoint – they are furnished to a high standard with a contemporary feel and many thoughtful touches which guests will love.
On the ground floor of the main cottage can be found the three bedrooms and family bathroom. The master bedroom has a king-sized bed with luxury en-suite with double shower. For lazy morning lie-ins, there’s a mounted TV which can be watched from the bed.
The second bedroom – ’The White Room’ – has a comfortable king-size bed. It also has a wall-mounted TV which can be watched from the bed.
Bedroom number three – ’The Red Room’ – has zip-link twins, which can also be configured as a king-size double on request.
The spacious family bathroom has a large shower over bath in a contemporary style, and alongside this can be found the handy utility room with a washing machine and tumble dryer.
The main living quarters are up the stairs and make the most of the wonderful views. Binoculars and bird-watching guidebooks can provide hours of entertainment from the windows, with guests able to spot eider ducks, willow warbler, and sandwich terns in the spring, or nesting gulls, eiders, oystercatchers, ringed plovers, and sandwich terns in the summer. In the cooler autumn and winter months, guests can keep warm using the beautiful log burner after long walks to spot the waders and wildfowl.
The fully-fitted kitchen has all the amenities and equipment to cook up a feast during the self-catered stay, including a Krups coffee machine and an integrated dishwasher.
The separate Hide is all on the ground floor and guests arrive into the large open-plan kitchen/living area, which has a double aspect and is flooded with light whatever the time of day. This leads off to the bedroom, which has a king-sized bed and luxury en-suite with walk-in shower.
Outside, there is ample off-road parking for several cars and plenty of trails to explore across the dunes. Access to the lodge is via a bumpy track, and it is recommended to bring a vehicle with high clearance for a more comfortable arrival.
Please note this is a nature reserve and there are restrictions on where you can wander. There is no access to the beach at this south tip of Walney Island. The reserve is run by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, with strict rules to follow regarding access. No dogs are allowed at the property or anywhere on the reserve, even on a lead. No fireworks or drones are permitted.
