The Malt Shovel is a pet friendly barn conversion with lots of charm and character. Excellent walks from the door.

Nestled in a truley rural location, this attractive detached barn has been thoughtfully converted retaining many beams and is situated in the grounds of the owner’s home in the delightful rural hamlet of Alton, just 7 miles from Matlock. The original farmhouse is early 19th century and was historically both a working farm and a pub. Featured as one of the doctors’ houses in Peak Practice, this makes an excellent base for visiting all the Peak District has to offer, with Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall close at hand, as well as Crich Tram Village and Hardwick Hall. The renowned show caves at Castleton are an easy drive, whilst Carsington Water for fly fishing and water sports is within 15 miles. Chesterfield with its crooked church spire is just 6 miles. There is excellent walking from the door and the area boasts stunning countryside. Horse riding, fishing and golf nearby. Shop and pub 1 mile.

Stone steps down to entrance (no handrail). Kitchen/dining room with flagstone floor. Stone steps to first floor: Beamed living room with multi fuel stove and wooden floor. Unfortunately we were disappointed with the cottage. The ‘enclosed’ garden is not enclosed if you have a dog, like we did it can easily wander onto the owners drive and out on to the road. The kitchen could do with a facelift and not the cleanest. The bedrooms were nice with comfortable beds and the showers and bath were clean. The living area was ok but the sofa was very uncomfortable and we had an influx of flies every night, which is no ones fault but very annoying!!! Don’t think you will be sitting in a nice country garden, I certainly wouldn’t have trusted the wooden chairs not to give way, there were a lot of stinging nettles, no bbq. Overall apart from the bedrooms and bathrooms the cottage was very tired and needed updating inside and certainly outside. Maybe I have set my standards too high but were so disappointed after looking forward to a well earned break after a couple of hard years, we actually left a day early. We informed the owners of our thoughts on the property and maybe improvements can be made for future guests as it could be a really beautiful cottage.

We had the absolute best time - The Malt Shovel delivered exactly what was needed; Peace & Quiet, a friendly welcome and all of the things you need to feel right at home. We had great fun watching the cows go up and down to pasture each day - don’t plan to drive anywhere between 6:15-6:35pm or these Freesian ladies will hold you up lol. The Malt Shovel offered itself exactly as per the photographs- space to relax as a group of 4 adults yet still maintained that warm cosy feeling you would expect with this property. If you want a ‘proper’ break from life, go here. You can get to local shops and supermarkets within a very short drive, it’s all practically on your doorstep should you need to top up. Pubs in Ashover & Bakewell were lovely for food and drinks, locals were super friendly and service wonderful. If I had to be constructive about 1 thing....? Perhaps some new garden furniture ... the wooden chairs did not fill me with confidence so I avoided them... I may have felt differently if I’d avoided a few more doughnuts in the past though!! Cows, chickens, a pony, a dog, a cat.... all great company too. Thankyou to the owners of the Malt Shovel for a wonderful stay - we feel lucky to have found this super place & will be back.

We had a lovely short break away at The Malt Shovel and it was all we could have asked for and more. Such a spacious property given its a 2 bedroom cottage and has loads of character. It has been tastefully decorated and comes fully equiped with all you could need. Our children loved going out in the morning to say hello to the horse and chickens and inspect any newly laid eggs. The dog walking was perfect too with some beautiful views. Great base for all thats on offer in the area, just a shame we didn't have longer as there would have been loads to keep us occupied. Thank you for making us feel so welcone and even checking on how our journey was going. Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Really enjoyed being in the farm surroundings with chickens and horse whilst staying in the converted barn. It was a lovely touch to find the owner had left a cake for us understanding why we were down in that area. Would stay again for the cosy log burning stove, the surroundings and the friendliness of the owners.

There was supposed to be a basket of logs supplied but there was not, despite asking for some. Logs outside the cottage door which you could help yourself to for a fee of £5 were huge and no axe there to chop them with (not that we would have attempted it). Ther wer no hooks or shelves to put anything on in the bathrooms although there were some glass shelves in the cupboard! The double bed room had a glass shelf over the sink but you could not use it as it slanted downwards! the heated towel rail in the same room was not working and we were told a chap would be in to fix it on the Monday or Tuesday. Nobody came. The lounge furniture was most uncomfortable but I have to say all beds were fine. No baking dishes and no receptacle for paper waste. Upstairs is a fire hazard as were we able to use the log burner and a fire occurred, we would not be able to escape as both exit doors were locked and there was no key to either. The cottage needs a lot of TLC to bring it to a reasonable standard.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner- Every guest is provided with a basket of logs for the wood burner, with additional available from the owners. The logs mentioned outside the property are logs that are drying out ready to be cut up for the wood burner not be used by the customer. There are glass shelves above every basin and also a cupboard underneath for storing toiletries The heated electric towel rail was replaced on the morning of this arrival so if there was any issues the owner should have been contacted. There is a recycling box outside of the property for paper, cardboard and cans. All customers are shown the fire exit procedure and there is a leaflet at the property also highlighting this. The key to get out of the fire access is also the same key as the main door for the property and the owners make sure every guest is aware of this. They are the same key so it easier to escape in a fire so you don’t have to try different keys in the lock. Finally, The owners pride themselves on the appearance of the property and are constantly making sure it is well looked after.
