Description

This property is located close to the Hirsel Lake and Dundock Wood, which is nationally renowned for its variety of wildlife.

Set in the heart of the historic Hirsel Estate just 18 miles from the coast at Berwick-upon-Tweed and adjacent to an 18-hole golf course, these two charming holiday cottages (Lakeview, ref SQQH and Ray Bells, ref SUUY) are beautifully furnished and decorated. Close to the Hirsel Lake which is nationally renowned for its otters, swans and wildfowl, there are waymarked walks through the estate and especially around Dundock Wood, famous for its rhododendrons and azaleas, full of wonderful colour and scent May to June. In the Homestead courtyard nearby there are fascinating craft workshops, a countryside museum, a tea room serving delicious lunches and home baking and a children’s play area. Edinburgh is just an hour away, while the wide sandy beaches of the Northumbrian coast are only 30 minutes’ drive. Shop and pub 1 mile.

This was our second visit to Lakeview. We love it for its peace and quiet, particularly in the evening when wandering around the lake hearing nothing but bird song is a delight. If you want that, you accept that the shops are a mile or so away but the proximity of the cafe means one can always get breakfast! There are some downsides. The property is managed from the Douglas estate office in Lanarkshire. The local cleaner is excellent and the state of the property cannot be faulted but perhaps it is not her job to check on equipment. On this occasion we could not find paring or other kitchen knives, an irritant but not insuperable. The main problem is still the bathroom. I agree that the previous wetroom always smelt dank and it was difficult to reach the toilet without walking through the wet floor, once someone had showered. My husbsnd joins those who have complained about the lack of a shaving mirror. I found the aperture to the toilet in the alcove too narrow, squeezing between the basin and the heated towel rail. Perhaps a smaller shower to create more room for the basin would have been better and the shower itself had no grab rail and was slippery but these irritants did not detract from our trip and we look forward to returning.
