The Dun Cow is perfectly located to explore the historic city of Durham with its cathedral and 11th-century castle, a designated World Heritage Site.

Perfectly located right at the heart of the peaceful village of Bishop Middleham, which boasts two popular village pubs and a local shop, Dun Cow Cottages are the most ideal semi-detached holiday homes for a family getaway or celebration. Situated just a short 8 mile drive away from the historic cathedral city of Durham, there are many links between the city and the village itself. Well-positioned between the three castles of Durham, Stockton and Darlington, Bishop Middleham became the favourite seat of the early bishops and has a wealth of its own history. Once known as a popular village pub The Dun Cow (ref UKC2544) remains an important part of that history and guests will be able to take a look at the unusual sign above the door which is identical to a carving on the north west turret of Durham Cathedral. Perfect for extended families wanting to meet up or for groups of friends wanting to holiday together, guests will find that The Dun Cow is spacious, bright and full of charm. The enclosed garden is large and well designed with a raised decking area and plenty of outdoor furniture. The Cottage (ref UKC3468) is a brilliant spot for couples to enjoy a quiet romantic break or for small families looking to discover the area. Alternatively, guests can book these two properties together and relish in some time with loved ones.
There are many established public footpaths, walks and cycle paths that lead directly through the village and out into the heart of County Durham. Perfect for families of all ages and with excellent transport links, there are plenty of amenities and attractions all within just a short 30-minute drive. The city of Durham, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is only 8 miles away and is one of the most historic cities in England, offering guests an abundance of attractions to visit and enjoy including Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral. There is also the Gala Theatre and Millennium Square located in the centre of the city, making this the perfect spot for guests wanting to enjoy a theatre trip as part of their break. Packed with top quality restaurants, bistros, cafés and bars, Durham is a thriving city with plenty of entertainment for guests at all time of the year. Guests have the opportunity to enjoy the Lumiere Festival every other year, annual book week, jazz festival, arts festival, miners gala and many more free attractions as well as the weekly farmer’s market and pavement artists that line the streets and market place. Should guests wish to enjoy a little retail therapy then they will find some beautiful boutiques along with many high street names and designer shops too. Durham County Cricket Club and Durham Golf Club are also only a short drive away as well as the pool and leisure centre at Freeman’s Quay.
A little further afield, but still within easy driving distance, guests will be able to enjoy a day trip to the magnificent North Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors, or visit one of the many smaller villages in County Durham. Bishop Auckland, which hosts the fabulous Kynren Spectacular, is only a 20-minute drive away and Barnard Castle is 40 minutes by car. There is also the opportunity to visit the Angel of the North statue which is only a 30-minute drive away, Beamish Museum, 20 miles, Newcastle, 30 miles and the Metrocentre, 26 miles. Beach 14½ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.
These properties can be booked together to accommodate up to 12 guests.

We stayed here for 4 nights in February and I couldn’t rate the accommodation highly enough. The cottage is immaculate, clean and maintained to a high standard. I have stayed in a few holiday letting over the years and there’s usually always something that lets a place down but there definitely wasn’t anything here at all! The kitchen is extremely well equipped, lots of clean towels and even delicious fresh cakes left on the cake stand for our arrival! It was warm, cozy and inviting for our arrival. Lots to do in the surrounding areas too. We would definitely stay here again, we’ve heard the garden is a sun trap in the summer so a summer stay next time sounds perfect!

We had stayed at the Dun Cow in April for my 70th birthday celebrations. On the morning of departure my daughter said 'wouldnt it be lovely to be here for Christmas`. We all agreed and booked it immediately we got home. The owners had put up a tree and decorations and left some delicious cup cakes. It was a perfect venue for Me, my husband,! My daughter and her husband and my son and his wife and his 2 children (19 & 15). I would definitely recommend it. As an aside it cost me a lot of money because so loved the big range cooker that I've bought one - delivered today!

A lovely spacious, clean and well equipped cottage. The bathroom was large with plenty of hot water and lovely towels. The bedrooms were comfy but one of the mattresses needs replacing. The village is quiet and not a lot to do there, but is a great base to travel to other areas. We had a nice day in Durham and Whitby. We will recommend this cottage.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately we were unaware the condition of the mattress wasn’t up to standard as there have been no previous complaints regarding this. We have now renewed this mattress.

Great girls weekend at the Dun Cow. Spacious and well furnished. Loved the large sitting area and well equipped kitchen. We also enjoyed the cupcakes left on arrival. Good friendly owner who communicates well. Lovely spa at Wynyard Hall. Recommend!

We stayed at the Dun Cow for my 50th Birthday. The cottage was the perfect place for our girly getaway. The cottage was very clean and well equipped, and there was plenty of room for us all. We had a fantastic weekend and would definitely recommend this cottage. Many thanks Andrew.

We had a great holiday and it was a good base for travelling. Cottage lovely and nicely equipped. Only downside for us was comfort of the beds, they were a little 'tired'. Lovely quiet village with tasty pub nearby and park for our children to play. Great outside space for our children to play in the back garden safely. A lovely relaxing holiday.

The Dun Cow was a real find. For our first weekend we had four generations here and the house accomodated us easily! The bedroom set up was ideal and there was plenty of parking for our 2 - 3 cars. It was in a lovely little village but had close access to larger villages and supermarkets making it an ideal base for our week's stay. The network of roads also made it very easy for us to get out much further afield to explore the area in general. The house itself had a well equipped kitchen and a separate laundry. The outside area was lovely to sit in. The owners were also great and very easy to talk to. All in all we had a fantastic time here and would love to come back should we ever get the opportunity.

This is a stunning holiday home. Lots of attention to detail to make you feel very welcome. Incredibly clean throughout. The massive bath is awesome (take lots of bubble bath!) and the kitchen is vey well equipped. The downstairs shower is also really good. There is a really great play park 3 minutes walk round the corner. The outside area is perfect for dogs and there is an great outhouse for doing laundry. The two pubs have friendly locals. A large supermarket is 5 mins drive away in the lovely village of Sedgefield. Durham is about a 20 minutes drive away and well worth visiting. The Cross keys pub up the road offers a great menu and a pool table. Plenty of room for parking in the village if you have more than one car. To be honest there is nothing negative to say about this home. We have stayed in many cottages over the years and this is definitely the best.

6 friends had a great weekend at the cottage. Guys went off walking & ladies had afternoon tea to celebrate royal wedding. Cottage well equipped & plenty of space. Garden a real sun trap - we had 2 dogs who were very happy there. Very good value. Would highly recommend. Marked down as the village was small & we struggled to find somewhere in the vicinity for a celebratory birthday meal.

The Dun Cow is probably one of the best cottages we have stayed in, it is spacious, comfortable, peaceful and has a touch of luxury and everything you need. The village has a shop and pubs and there are supermarkets in easy reach. There are good walks locally and there is a lot of history in the local area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the weather was amazing so we got the best out of the garden including the BBQ! The beds were comfortable, plenty of space for all our family to chill out, brilliant having the woodburner too for when there was a chill in the evening. All in all, amazing and we would love to return.

Had a lovely stay at easter. House was clean, warm and well equipped. The only issue was the 3rd bedroom on the 1st floor was advertised as twin beds on the website however in fact it was a double. It's a very small room as well in comparison to the other 2 doubles. The village is quiet but easy to get to from the A1.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Agency; Thank you for your feedback. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay at The Dun Cow. Bedroom 3 is in fact a double bedroom and we apologise that this was advertised as a twin. The property description will be updated with the correct information. We hope this didn’t affect your stay too much as it would be a pleasure to have you book again in the future.
