The Coach House @ The Old Rectory is perfect for a romantic getaway for couples, lying in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the Blackdown Hills, between Chard in the south and Taunton in the north. Formerly an Edwardian Coaching House built to house the horses of Reverend Lance in 1905 and set in the grounds of The Old Rectory and the owner’s home, it has been lovingly restored into a cosy two bedroomed cottage. It is stylish, with many original features retained, yet it offers all the modern creatures comfort, such as a well-equipped kitchen with granite worktops, and a lovely raised mezzanine living area which resembles an original horse loose box and accommodates the original hay and water feeder. If not enjoying the beautiful cottage, countryside and surroundings, this location is ideal for dog walking or simply taking in the wildlife and scenery, with much to enjoy within easy driving. There are many historic houses in the area, such as Montacute House and Gardens, Forde Abbey and Gardens, Barrington Court and Hestercombe Gardens, or, guests can drive to Glastonbury Tor for an exhilarating walk to the top with some magnificent views of Somerset, perhaps calling in at The Clarkes Factory Village, Wells Cathedral and Palace. The Quantocks and Exmoor National Park are within easy driving and for a trip back in time, travel from Taunton along the West Somerset Steam Railway to Minehead. Going south, visit West Dorset and Devon, maybe spending a day or two exploring the World Heritage Jurassic coastal resorts of Sidmouth, Seaton and Lyme Regis. The county town of Taunton is also well worth a visit, with its many shops, restaurants and places of interest. Beach 15 miles. Shop 6 miles, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Two of us spent 5 days over Christmas at The Coach House and it was perfect. The cottage is warm and cosy, very useful when it's raining a lot outside and you need to dry clothing. The baths were a lovely treat particularly with the little lights around them, very romantic. Sally was a lovely host, coming to greet us on our first day and making sure everything was as we'd expected. The hamper was lovely with some great Christmas treats and they had even put a little Christmas tree up for us. Mobile reception was "interesting" but the wifi was very good. The local information Sally had left was very useful and we tried several of the pubs and also utilised the maps that were available for use whilst staying at the cottage. We hope to come back in the summer and do some more walking (and eating)! Thank you so much Sally.

Great locn and very clean . My only issue is lack of cupboard space ( existing are way too high to reach ) had to stand on a chair to get a glass . Nowhere to store food . Owners very pleasant and helpful

The cottage is warm and comfortable but has two drawbacks: 1. Things in the upper kitchen cupboards (eg glasses) cannot be reached without standing on a chair. We are a bit old for this. 2. The eves slope immediately from the ground in the bedrooms. In one bedroom, the bedside tables are arranged so you sleep with your head a few inches from the ceiling or you sleep the other way round and can't reach the bedside lamps.

Response on behalf of the owner; We were disappointed to read your review and hear that these two things significantly impacted your stay as we thought from the email exchange that you had enjoyed your stay. We will take on board your comments re the glasses.

Lovely place to stay. Owners were very friendly, with a welcome pack left out for us which was a lovely gesture.
