This property is part of our Welcome Cottages collection

A carefully curated collection of properties that offer high quality, good value accommodation in great locations across the UK, Ireland, France and Italy

The Byre offers a great holiday retreat for couples with a small child to get away from it all and enjoy a superb part of Dorset.

In a lovely location in the quiet village of Fifehead Magdalen between Shaftesbury, this detached Grade II listed converted barn in local Marnhull stone is set in its own private grounds adjoining the owners’ Grade II listed farmhouse. This good quality conversion was originally for the owners’ own occupation. There are splendid uninterrupted views from the living room and garden over Duncliffe Wood, Melbury Beacon and the Blackmore Vale. Shaftesbury, with its famous Gold Hill and character shops, and Sherborne, with its abbeys, castle and restaurants, are delightful places to visit. There are many attractions within easy driving including Stourhead House and Gardens, Kingston Lacy, a day out at Longleat House and Safari Park, Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum, the Haynes Motor Museum with its fascinating selection of classic cars and Salisbury with its wonderful cathedral. Locally you can enjoy some great country walking or simply relax and wine and dine in some of the local village pubs. Alternatively just stay in (by the wood burning stove in the winter or out on the patio in the summer) and enjoy this rural idyll. Come for your honeymoon, wedding anniversary, significant birthday (please tell the owners so they can make it even more special) or a quiet break with your baby, as there is space in the bedroom for you to bring your own cot. The Jurassic Coast is 28 miles away. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

All on the ground floor.
Living room:
With wood burner, 25" Freeview TV, DVD player, double sofa bed (for flexible sleeping arrangements), wooden floor and patio doors leading to garden.
Kitchen/dining room: With oil Rayburn, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and wooden floor.

Bathroom: With Grohe shower over bath, toilet and washing machine.

A stunning property, would recommend with pleasure. The owners have supplied everything you would need within this property. The location is beautiful, so close to so many places that are worth visiting. The Byre is in such a tranquil setting, I couldn't fault it and will definitely be booking another stay at this property in the future.

Thoroughly enjoyable long weekend in a tasteful, comfortable, well-furnished cottage. The sitting room has an open, spacious feeling due to the glass roof and the wood burning stove was a welcome feature in early December. The owners were very friendly and welcoming and provided wine, beer, cheese, biscuits and homemade bread. Peaceful location in scenic area, would certainly stay again.

Cozy and comfortable cottage, an interesting conversion of old buildings. Views are beautiful from the garden and sitting room. Lots of walking direct from the door, perfect for dogs. Very generous 'welcome pack' including home made bread much appreciated. Good pubs and local farm shop. Would definitely stay again if in the area.

This cottage is a bright and airy place to stay due to having a glass roof in the lounge. It as everything you need to enjoy your stay. The owners Nick and Victoria are a lovely couple who will go that extra mile to make sure your stay is perfect.

Excellent accommodation in a quiet and beautiful village location overlooking the unspoilt views of the Dorset countryside. Very comfortable and well furnished to a high quality. Plenty of well signposted walks in the locality and also in the nearby villages. A really nice touch, is the welcome pack provided by the owners. The owners are very welcoming and helpful. Certainly somewhere for a return visit.

The building and situation are good with lovely views. We even had the bell ringers practising one evening! Inside the property seems somewhat tired and in need of freshening. For example the bathroom was not clean, despite many available cleaning products. Other areas would also have benefited from a good clean. The wooden worktops in the kitchen were sticky and needed re-varnishing. We were surprised to find an oil fired Rayburn as the only source of heating and cooking. Fortunately my husband had learnt to cook on an AGA so he managed. Anyone not used to that type of cooker would struggle a bit I would think. The hot water was very hot and there seemed no way to adjust it. Thus having a shower was virtually impossible. I managed but my husband, who is somewhat disabled had to have baths, which was difficult from the perspective of getting in and out. On a positive note the area was beautiful and I would definitely visit Dorset again but stay elsewhere.

Loved The Byrd. Beautiful location surrounded by open countryside. Large living area, ceiling to floor windows/ doors overlooking the back garden. However this property is in a very remote area with no village shop to buy groceries or village pub. I would therefore recommend either booking an online grocery order prior to your arrival, which is what i’d done or bringing supplies with you

Beautiful location and lovely welcome pack. The only down side was the general cleanliness of the property. It obviously hadn't been cleaned for a while prior to our arrival.

My wife and I would thoroughly recommend staying at this delightful, restful cottage. The proprietors couldn't have made us any more welcome, baking bread to coincide with our arrival, and leaving Flowers on the table. There was some food in the fridge in case we were without, and although we were expecting a self-catering cottage, it had the feel of a lovely B&B. The low score is purely for the village itself, which has no amenities whatsoever, and you have to drive 5 miles for the nearest pub. Well done Nic and Victoria!!
