English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

This holiday apartment is set close to local amenities and has a friendly atmosphere with everything visitors would need.

The Admiral’s House - five well-furnished and equipped apartments (three feature here) - is stunningly located on the edge of Ilfracombe’s Heritage harbour with great harbour and beach views from all living rooms and bedrooms. A steep terraced garden accessed from the 2nd floor of the house is ideal for sunbathing, as a picnic area and for more great views. The Admiral’s House is centrally located for Ilfracombe’s main attractions. There are friendly pubs and restaurants, including Damien Hirst’s The Quay (opposite side of harbour), and shops, cafes within a few minutes’ stroll. There are local boats for trips and fishing; for special experiences, the summer Lundy Island ferry runs from the harbour, sometimes the famous Waverly Paddle Steamer offers coastal cruises. The Admirals’ House is a
5-minute walk to the Landmark Theatre; the path at the front of the house is the start of the coastal path leading to Hillsborough Nature Reserve and the coves of Reparee and Larksdown. Hele beach is a short walk, or there is paddling on the sandy beach just below the window. A great base for touring - surfing at Croyd and Woolacombe; cream teas at many gardens, NT properties; unspoilt Exmoor; the Victorian cliff railway at Lynton and Lynmouth; many mini theme parks within a short drive. Returning to the harbourside holiday apartment, fishing boats can be seen landing their catch, and crab and lobster can be bought for supper! Shops 100 yards.

Entrance with stairs to second floor: Large, open-plan living room with bay window and kitchen/dining room. Double bedroom. Small twin bedroom. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. All rooms have harbour views.

On arrival we received a very friendly welcome from Debbie. The apartment is well presented, and has excellent views of the harbour. Our only criticism is the rear garden which needs a makeover. However this did not detract from our enjoyment of the holiday.

Stayed here with my partner and three children aged 8, 3 and 10 Months. Fabulous view from the lounge windows and close to everything shops, bars, restaurants etc. Parking was very dificult as there is only several spaces at the front of the building and they are taken up with residents who rarely move and when they do the space is taken within minutes. There are two car parks accross the road and down some steps to the front of the property the first one costs £11.40 for 24 hours but if you drive up the hill it only costs £4.40 for 24 hours. The biggest disappointment was the hot water the pressure is not high enough to fill the kitchen sink in less than 20 minutes so we had to wash up in cold water and there was no chance of a hot bath. The cot mattress had holes in it which does not match saftey standards. The Lamp wasn't working in one room and electric could be seen sparking from the plug socket behind the bedside table in the childrens room. I did mention it to the owner but she just removed the lamp. The fire in the lounge was not working and the windows open upwards very dangerous for children so we had to keep them locked which didn't help with the hot weather, but better than them falling to their death. The building has a lot of history to it but overall needs refurbishing.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your feedback. The parking outside The Admirals House on Quayfield Rd. is the only road that offers free parking in Ilfracombe harbour and so naturally subject to a first come first served basis however if there is nothing available on arrival you can unload and I will point you to the long stay car park £4.40 24hrs. Alternatively you can buy a 1wk North Devon parking permit that allows you to park in several car parks throughout North Devon, great if you are traveling around. The long stay pass is roughly £22 and can be purchased from the tourist information. The hot water tank is actually located next to the bath and guests before and since have had no problem having a hot bath, I can only think you didn't put the emergent heater on or you ran the cold with the hot, easy mistake for guests that aren’t used to this system. If I had been made aware of this I could have helped you. Regarding the hot water in the kitchen yes it does run slow as it’s an old building and the pipes go up but 20 minutes for a sink of water is incorrect; I would say it’s more like 5 minutes. Regarding the PVC mattress it was a small tear in the corner, it has since been addressed. The lamp was and still is working and I decided it was best to remove it because you advised you could see sparks from behind the socket. The fan fire in the lounge did not work but I was unaware and it has since been replaced, however there are wall heaters in all the rooms which soon heat up the apartment. Last but not least all the windows have window locks on them for child safety so only open roughly 5 inches. If you want to open the windows fully the locks need to be removed, though this would not be advisable with young children in the party. Our booking conditions state that guests are to leave the property similar to how it is found and unfortunately they were not adhered to as upon departure the property was found to have been left in an unsatisfactory condition which therefore required extra cleaning. We feel our other reviews give a much more balanced view of the property and our recent customers’ choice award reflects this.

Lovely apartment overlooking the harbour. It had everything in the property we needed. The owner greeted us and was easily contactable. We struggled finding good "pub grub" but that's probably our own tastes!! Loved the fudge from Rolys Fudge on the harbour.
