Where better to relax after a a day exploring Turrif and the surrounding area, than in a castle? Delgatie’s shared historic grounds are yours to embrace.

Historic accommodation, set in tranquil location

Delgatie Castle sits peacefully amid fields and forests, on a large country estate. It has a long and chequered history, dating back from 1050 and was once home to the late Captain Hay - a feudal baron. Now open to the public, the castle provides a wealth of interest for visitors, plus the opportunity to sample delicious home baking in the cosy tea room. Symbister Suite is located in the north wing of the castle, and has, as you would expect, all the style and ambience of a real stately home. Turriff, 3 miles, is home to a host of activities and interests. River fishing, with brown trout and salmon both available at cost. You can play golf on any of the several 18-hole courses in the area, or enjoy some time on a boating lake or even a putting green. Alternatively, play tennis, bowls, or go riding or shooting. Try the indoor sports and swimming pool complex. Nearby there are stately homes and castles to explore, museums and heritage centres, picturesque coastal villages, nature reserves and colourful parks, as well as famous distilleries. Advance grocery service available on request.

We had a nice stay. Whilst we wouldn’t stay again, that is more a reflection of our requirements than any fault of the accommodation. When we arrived there had been confusion over our booking and our accommodation wasn’t ready. The owner very kindly paid for us to go to Tariff to get a bite to eat whilst she prepared the accommodation. We have young children, and she provided an excellent children’s kitchen for them to play with which was a real hit. The main living area is nice and comfortable and the kitchen is excellent. Well laid out with plenty of utensils and cutlery. The master bedroom is very nice and the two other rooms were perfectly adequate. There are steep stairs up to the living area, and with young children we did have to block off the stairs. I would agree with some other reviews that the suite could do with a bit of an update. The kitchen is clearly new, but the rest of the suite is quite dated and could do with a bit of a spruce up. As it was late October, it was cold, and there are only electric heaters. These are adequate but are a bit clumsy, though I expect trying to install permanent heating in such an old building would be prohibitively expensive. That said, we were warm enough and comfortable enough. The shower was powerful and warm, and the suite does have a certain charm to it. We visited the castle which is very interesting and enjoyed an afternoon tea. There was plenty of space to roam in the grounds. There is an abundance of things to see and do in the area, and you are only a 15mins drive from the coast. Aberdeen is an hour away and Inverness a little more than that. I think the suite is better suited to those wishing to explore the castles, estates and distillery’s of the area, and perhaps would suit a group of friends or 2 couples. That said, for a family of 5 it is ideal and very well priced. The owner very kindly offered us an extra night; we were unable to accept owing to having to be back in Edinburgh the following day, but had this not been the case we would have taken up her offer. Overall, this was a very pleasant stay, and I would recommend this accommodation reflecting its price, location and general comfort.

Not the cleanest property we have stayed in but when we brought this to the attention of the staff they were so apologetical and promised action. Having said that we would not hesitate to return and would highly recommend it. So much history and a lovely spot to stay.

A complete home from home, we couldn’t ask for a better place to stay. Joan looked after our every need. Well equipped kitchen, spacious bedrooms and bathrooms and really clean and tidy. The location is great too because it’s near loads of castles and distilleries. We joined the national trust for Scotland and saved a fortune.

The only complaint I have for an otherwise wonderful stay was that the kitchen was a bit under equipped. No oven gloves to use to get hot dishes out of the oven and no dustpan and brush or broom. Apart from that the whole week was excellent, the staff exceedingly friendly and the food in the café delicious. The beds, sofa and armchairs etc were very comfortable. We loved the cats!

Calm relaxing and quiet. A lovely apartment. The castle was very interesting. Especially with it being fairly recently used as his home by the late Captain Hay.
