Description

Relax on the roof terrace and enjoy spectacular sea views from family cottage, situated just yards from the sea shore.

In a superb position towards the southern end of Skye, this completely modernised 150-year-old cottage stands on the sea shore overlooking the Sound of Sleat, at a point highlighted as an outstanding viewpoint by Ordnance Survey. There are magnificent panoramic views northwards to Ben Screel, Loch Hourn and Knoydart, eastwards to Loch Nevis, and southwards to Ardnamurchan Point. The holiday cottage is tastefully furnished and well equipped, with all three bedrooms enjoying their own separate facilities. It stands in 3 acres of wild garden, and the principal rooms and roof terrace offer splendid opportunities to observe the local wildlife, which includes herons, curlews, eagles and even the occasional otter. The roof terrace has a glass and aluminium balustrade and balustraded bridge to the hill at rear of cottage, leading to the unfenced path which goes up into woodland or down into the garden. There are wonderfully scenic walks direct from the door, either along the shoreline, or for the more adventurous, one of the classic Skye walks taking the loop road to Tarskavaig with unbeatable views to the Cuillins. There are ferry trips to the islands of Eigg, Rhum and Lochalsh, and day trips can include Elgol, with a boat trip to the magical Loch Coruisk, hidden in the Cuillins or the Seafari rib boat to Knoydart and dine at The Forge Inn. Other places to visit include Talisker Distillery, Dunvegan Castle, Portree, with its attractive harbour and heritage centre, which traces the history of Skye. Six miles away is Lady Claire MacDonald’s Kinloch Lodge Hotel and Cookery School, where morning cookery courses are held. Mallaig ferry 3 miles. Kyle of Lochalsh ferry 19 miles. Ardvasar Hotel, Isle Ornsay Hotel and Duisdale Hotel all within 5 miles. Armadale Castle, with its history centre, garden walks, tearooms and restaurant, 3 miles. Toravaig Hotel 1 mile.

Large kitchen with table and chairs opening into observation room with large picture windows and outstanding views across the Sound of Sleat. Utility room. Dining room with multi-fuel burner, satellite TV, video and radio. Living room with music centre, TV and DVD. Double bedroom with en-suite shower room, toilet and sea view. Cloakroom and toilet. First floor: Two bedrooms, both overlooking the sea; one double with en-suite bathroom, toilet and electric over-bath shower, and one twin bedroom. Shower room with toilet. Second staircase (spiral) to observatory ‘The Otter Bar’ with chiller and ice maker, bar height table with 7 bar stools, easy chairs, and panoramic mountain, sea and shore views, with door out to truly stunning 55 square metre roof terrace.

Lovely cottage with everything you could possibly need for a lovely stay. Howard, the owner, is so helpful. His book about the history of the house, places to visit and general information is the best we’ve seen anywhere! Location, comfort, excellent.

Southbay Cottage was a clean and comfortable place with an otter motif that brought a smile to our faces. The kitchen worked well and was well-equipped. The bed was comfortable, the linens high quality and the shower was good. The otter bar upstairs was the perfect place to enjoy a wee dram and play the wonderful music collection while playing Scrabble. The views were superb from every window, but especially from the otter bar and the breakfast bar adjacent to the kitchen. The video system was nice and we appreciated the WiFi. The Armadale Castle and new distillery were wonderful activities, and the Aird of Sleat walk was dramatic. A wonderful week!

South Bay is an easy ten out of ten for me. The house is big with plenty of room to spread out and is well equipped. Every window you look out of has a fabulous view of the Kyle. It’s the lovely location that makes the cottage so special and is best enjoyed from the comfort of the “Otter” bar. The cottage is only a short drive from various places to eat and the COOP store in Broadford is only 15 minutes away and has everything you might need. The Isle of Skye is beautiful no matter which direction you travel in. Howard the owner was staying at his other cottage Maccinisfree and invited us over for a cuppa on our last day. Howard genuinely wants all his guests to enjoy their stay and showed us around the cottage which I’m sure we will be booking in the future.

What a stunning place. The cottage (the word hardly does it justice) is huge, comfortable, and located in an area of such beauty that when the inevitable rainy day occurs you can just watch otters and eagles from the warmth of the breakfast room.

Overall comfortable and terrific views. Felt whole cottage needed good clearing out- kitchen was FILLED with stuff !made cooking much more difficult. The window downstairs bedroom leaked. The bathroomensuite was bit mouldy, cutain and shower. There was absolutely nowhere to put anything down in it. Women need a shelf.Mirror was over side of bed- trying to dry hair AND look in mirror impossible. Now these are small things.....but irritating. The step in kitchen needs highlighting ,I fell full length and my son in law tripped. Fridge door on wrong way and for me,having dishwasher miles from cupboards and sink a nuisance. Would be HUGE improvement if dining room and kitchen combined. Driveway bit of a challenge going up with 4 plus loaded car. Garage snelt ghastly and leaked. Appreciate it was autumn but still. With a bit of thought and effort could be so much nicer. I felt we were paying an awful lot, getting a view yes, but not a cottage at the level I expect. And I stay in self catering all the time. I probably wouldnt stay again but partly because I would go for a different area of Skye.but I would not want to spend that level of money for a cottage which needs a good sort out.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Firstly, may I thank these visitors for the marks of nine for Cleanliness and for Location and for the delightful entry in the Visitors’ Book “the house is comfortable and we kept very cosy... the views and location are breath taking, very easy to let the time trip away sitting in the kitchen or the otter bar. Beds were very comfortable, and we slept well and peacefully - all in all a great week”. I am sorry that the one cupboard in the large kitchen with coffee, various teas, sauces, numerous herbs and spices and other ingredients so much appreciated by most visitors and weekly checked for in date, was a hindrance and I have taken customers words to heart and reduced their number considerably, and also disposed of a lot of duplicate pots and pans, so it is now truly de cluttered. The dishwasher in the utility room is seven yards from the kitchen cupboard with plates etc., but this utility room is so useful especially for visitors with pets. The ground floor bedroom is kept fairly free of furniture to maximise the view from the ceiling to floor picture window overlooking the shore and sea beyond, but in view of comments I have added a further mirror and seat. There is shelf space in the bathroom if the long and quite wide window sill is used. I apologise that there was some mould, the curtains have been replaced with blinds and tiles re-grouted and will be more closely monitored. I am sorry the customers felt that under £30 a day per person for the four of them and their two dogs for a week at the end of October for this superbly situated cottage with outstanding views, full oil fired central heating, multi fuel stove and two Wi-Fi systems, three televisions, and a roof terrace, three sitting rooms, four bathrooms/cloakroom, was overpriced. Whilst I welcome all guidance to make the cottage welcoming and practical, I will not be acting on their advice to combine the kitchen with the dining room in this 150 year old Hebridean cottage, where a log fire in the dining room makes for atmospheric candlelit suppers, but I will take on board their other valued suggestions.

Lovely stay in a spectacular location. The cottage has everything we could possibly have needed. It was cosy and comfortable and the view was wonderful. We walked, read and just spent time looking out at the ever changing view.
