Views of the Atlantic Ocean

Glorious uninterrupted sea views from this breathtaking location, one of Hartland’s most stunning spots. Smuggler’s Retreat is a delightful, spacious, detached property, set amidst the owners’ 17th-century farm. Lovingly converted from a former barn, it retains plenty of character with beams, stone walls and feature floors, and is presented to a very good standard. The superb living area takes full advantage of the views, and the sunny patio is the ideal spot to relax and watch the waves and dine al fresco. The luxurious hot tub adds the finishing touches for a holiday to remember. The magnificent, rugged English Heritage coastline of Hartland and beyond runs across the farm in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering a perfect haven for walkers and bird watchers. Narrow lanes from the doorstep wind down to secluded sand and shingle beaches. Berry Beach is just a short walk. Children will love the pets corner on the farm, and the large play field is the perfect spot for them to let off steam. The famous sandy surfing beaches of Westward Ho! and Bude are an easy drive and for family fun, the Big Sheep and the Milky Way adventure parks are close by. There are numerous National Trust properties in the area, as well as the RHS gardens at Rosemoor and Docton Mill. Clovelly with its quaint cobbled streets and picturesque harbour is a must. The village of Hartland is just 3 miles and has a good selection of village shops and pubs all serving good local produce. The historic port of Bideford with its lively market, Lundy Island ferry, array of shops and other amenities is just 15 miles. Golf, fishing, sailing, surfing and horse riding available locally. Shops and pubs 3 miles.

We booked this cottage for 4 days and wished we had booked for longer! It was so comfortable, cosy and very homely. Amazing sea views and scenery. Our little boy loved the animals and the play area as well as the jacuzzi bath. Great games room where I played pool for the first time in years. Loved the hot tub too! The cottage kitchen is well equipped and we were able to cook some nice meals. I would say bring your own shower/bath products as they are not provided. I read a review where someone commented on the little extras in the bathrooms so I thought that meant toiletries! Towels, however, are provided. We visited Hartland Quay and Clovelly which are a short drive away. I can highly recommend Shamrock Fish & Chips in Hartland. Unfortunately we didn’t get to visit The Hart Inn this time but definitely next time as we will be back! The only thing I regret is not asking someone how to get to Berry Beach. It does say in the welcome book how to get to it which we tried to do but couldn’t see the duck pond? Oh well, another thing to do next time! This was our first time booking a self catering cottage holiday and a first as a family too. We loved it and it was perfect for us. Looking forward to many more cottage holidays in the future!

We loved our stay so much! The cottage was beautiful and the views were stunning! Lovely that we had a bottle of wine, crisps and biscuits on arrival. Every one on the farm was very friendly and always made an effort to say hello. The beds were so so comfy. Normally you can't wait to get home and back in your own bed but I didn't want to at all. The whole place was spotless and so homely. The photos of the cottage don't do it enough justice! Yes it is in the middle of nowhere but that's what we loved about it. Bude is half hour drive and a really lovely place to look around or sit on the beach for the day. The hot tub was fantastic especially the views. Will defiantly be back. 100% recommend if you want a beautiful place and aren't afraid to take a drive to visit different places. Thanks again.

Lovely cosy cottage with amazing views. Beds are comfortable and showers have good pressure as long as all 3 are not being used at once but even then there was more pressure than mine at home! The kitchen is the best equipped I have found in a holiday rental The only thing we could have used were a couple of baking sheets rather than the roasting tins provided but you could easily cook up a full family meal. I don't think I've stayed anywhere else where I would say that. The hot tub and games room were welcome at the end of the day. The games room had been mistreated by some guests but this is unfortunately normal with any shared games room. This didn't stop us from enjoying it but don't expect a pristine surface on the pool table! The owners are close by for any issues and made a point of welcoming us. Small problem with one toilet was dealt with in minutes and the pool table was also quickly repaired when needed. The location is lovely but may not suit everyone. It is quite exposed to the elements and there is nothing close by. The village is only 3 miles but seems a lot further because of the narrow lanes.

We had a fabulous holiday. The house was excellent and we had great weather. The owners were very friendly and helpful. There were 6 of us plus our baby granddaughter - there was a cot and highchair for her - v. good. The hot tub was great, also the games room. The only thing I could possibly criticise was the small fridge freezer - not large enough for a family of 6 and considering that the nearest shops were a long drive away. But we managed!! Would definitely book again.

We had the best holiday, the views are amazing. The family running the farm are so friendly (as are the dogs!). Our 2 children (18m and 5) loved the animals, the games room and small park. We walked to the beach once but with 2 small children it was quite challenging, worth a visit though if you're feeling energetic. Gorgeous Bude and Westward Ho a short drive away. Would highly recommend!

Gorgeous property - lovely views, owners are really friendly. Total escape to get away from it all but supermarkets still deliver so we didn’t have to take good as well. Completely relaxed, was just fab. Sat outside at night and watched bats flying about, relaxed in hot tub during the day and just chilled. Lovely!

Wow, what a place. Idyllic is not quite the right word but near enough. We had a wonderful week with our grown up family. I'm not so sure about children though but there is plenty to do around and about. If you take advantage of the beach be warned its a very arduous trek down to the foreshore. The people who own the site are adorable and always willing to assist in any way they can, they also own the resturant in the local village which is worth a visit. There are farm dogs about and a very friendly donkey, one dog holly is the most affectionate dog I've ever met. It is a bit of a way off the main road but with care is easy to get to. We really didn't want to leave.

Not much to do within walking distance when you have a 4 year old, but bude is half an hour one way and westward ho half an hour the other, and there is plenty of interest on the farm with the games room, hot tub and play area, plus of course hank the donkey, she didnt get bored. Providing you want peace and tranquillity suits a variety of ages/holiday desires. My only disappointment is I only booked a week

Lovely place, owners were very friendly, beautiful location and stunning views.

The cottage is in a lovely location, but is very tired, lights not working, decoration, etc, and needs updating. There were cobwebs and dust and the furniture was worn and needs updating.

Lovely place, owners were very friendly, beautiful location and stunning views.
