This stunning waterfront 19th-century former fisherman’s cottage in Appledore, north Devon offers panoramic riverside views from all floors and is a popular choice with holidaymakers.

Situated in an enviable position on the banks of the Torridge Estuary, the decked roof terrace and the private balcony both give unrivalled viewing platforms that perfectly capture the constantly changing coastal scene towards the pretty village of Instow and beyond. It provides the perfect location for both sunbathing and boat watching as well as being an excellent setting for al fresco dining on the terrace. Its close proximity to the water means crabbing is possible whilst sitting on the edge of the balcony during high tide, which is also great for children and adults! Shorewaters Cottage has been sympathetically renovated for holiday lettings and offers stylish living accommodation in neutral, contemporary tones. It can comfortably sleep six people and benefits from two double bedrooms, both with river views, a third bedroom with bunk bed and a spacious open plan living/kitchen and dining area. There is also a bathroom with a shower over bath and an additional toilet.
Positioned on a quiet backwater street, Shorewaters is located within easy walking distance of Appledore’s bustling quay and quaint village which hosts a wide range of cafés, public houses and boutique shops. From the quay you can take either the ferry across the river or enjoy the short drive to Instow which offers a quiet inlet and a dog friendly sandy beach along with a selection of pubs and restaurants specialising in locally caught seafood. The historic port town of Bideford is just two miles away, as is the sandy beach of Westward Ho!, which is popular with surfers, windsurfers and beach lovers alike. Alternative popular beaches including Croyde, Woolacombe and Combe Martin which are also still within a short drive from the cottage. There are plenty of local attractions and amenities nearby including Northam golf course, horse riding stables, an indoor swimming pool, fishing, sailing and water skiing facilities. Other family attractions include the Big Sheep and Milky Way theme parks, Dartington Crystal Factory, Tapeley Park, the Tarka Trail, which is popular with walkers and cyclists, and the Atlantic village shopping centre. Whether you’re seeking the perfect base to explore all that north Devon has to offer or the perfect getaway location to relax and unwind, Shorewaters offers it all. Beach 1 mile (by ferry). We enjoyed a relaxing holiday at Shorewaters. The panoramic views from both balconies were amazing! A great way to relax overlooking the sea with a glass of wine! The cottage is situated close to amenities and the promenade, where we took our dog for a walk in the evenings. Instow beach can be viewed across the estuary and is easily reached by car or ferry. A superb beach ideal for dog walkers. The accommodation at Shorewaters was comfortable and clean. The wine hamper was a nice touch, which we took advantage of after a long journey! We look forward to returning for another holiday in the future.

Fantastic views and living area very good but equipment lacked some basics like sharp knives in kitchen and small bin bags. We also had to defrost the freezer compartment of the frig so that the door would shut properly. Sleeping accommodation a bit cramped on first floor and stairs very steep and not suitable for older people. Bathroom a disaster - extremely small and bath too high from the floor so that stepping out is dangerous. A larger person would not be able to sit on the loo as the space is too small. Towel rail wouldn't heat and despite opening the window and leaving the extractor on everything got very damp. No car parking space other than overnight in the street where someone took the front off the car on the first night. I should think that it would be very cramped for 6 people - we were 2 plus a temporary visitor and that was enough.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your comments and your positive review of our cottage. A couple of points you raise we are already aware about, notably the bathroom arrangement which we are in the process of redesigning once we enter the quieter season which we are very excited about. We were not aware about the knives so we have had these replaced and the bin liners are normally located under the sink, both are available for all future guests. We have had up to 8 people comfortably stay at Shorewaters before and have never had any issue with space on our personal visits but we are an old fishermans cottage so it is at a premium in Appledore. Thank you once again and we would love for you to come back and see all the changes for the cottage planned for the next season.

Had a great time at Shorewaters. Found ourselves getting up early just to sit and enjoy the view! Always something to look at as the tide came in and out. Had no problem finding somewhere to park on the next road up and Appledore has a lovely feel about it. Ferry to Instow and the lovely family beach is a must and found lots of activities nearby to keep our 8 year old amused...skern lodge was very good. Thank you for our welcome pack which provided much needed refreshment until our Tesco delivery arrived. If you are looking for somewhere where you will be just as happy staying in admiring the view you can't get much better than this.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Fantastic comments. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at our cottage. We totally agree that the view is amazing at any time of year and especially when the sun shines over the estuary and we too have much enjoyed the ever changing tidal flows in the mornings. We are also glad the welcome pack kept you refreshed and it sounds like you took full advantage of all the amenities and attractions in the area too. We very much look forward to seeing you at Shorewaters again one day soon.

Could do with some updating as a bit tatty in places. Bathroom very small and toilet too close to bath. Floors were scratched. Dining table was dirty and wok was filthy. Would benefit from a larger bathroom (or just remove bath and make into a shower room) and some tlc in areas. Main bedroom was lovely except for lack of mirrors. Location was lovely too and balcony on first floor was good especially when it was sunny.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Sorry to hear that there were certain points that you raise that influenced the quality of your stay at the cottage. We take all our feedback received by our customers seriously so we have already reviewed and rectified the points you have raised and have removed the wok which was not part of our itinerary, purchased an additional mirror for the bedroom and made the cleaners aware about your observations over the table. As new owners of the cottage we are always looking for ways to improve the property with customer’s satisfaction at the forefront of any decisions we make which include the suggestions given here. Overall we are glad that you enjoyed the views and sunny weather on the balcony and would hope you would visit us again in the future.

Very comfortable cottage in the lovely town of Appledore. Our stay was enhanced by heavy snowfall, the view looking even better through the snowflakes. Visitors need to be aware of the steep steps to the bedrooms though.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your positive review of our cottage. We are very jealous that you managed to stay during the recent spell of heavy snow as we are yet to experience this ourselves. Thank you for choosing Shorewaters for your holiday and we would love to have you back.

This is the second year we have stayed at Shorewaters. We go have been away to a lot of properties that have seaviews ,but this is the only property we love so much that we would live here if we could.Looking forward to staying here again later this year.😀

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Wow thank you. It is lovely to receive such positive comments about your stay at the cottage - and a 10/10 review too. Had a great week with family and couldn’t get enough of the view from the lounge out over the water. Cottage had everything we needed and we’re likely to be back. If booking just be aware the stairs are quiet steep for the elderly. Thank You Shorewaters.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you too for your lovely comments. We are really glad you found the cottage fully equipped during your stay with your family. We are also glad you took full advantage of the views. We thank you for your custom and forward to having you stay with us again soon.
