This deceptively spacious, semi-detached, old fisherman’s cottage is set just off the harbour in the centre of Craster. Dating back to 1890, it is tucked away, only a stone’s throw from the sea. It has a tiered garden which is detached from the property, about 30 yards away with views to the sea and harbour. The coastal path leads to Dunstanburgh Castle and onto the sandy beaches at Embleton. Brimming with character and sprinkled with family antiques, this holiday cottage provides a homely and welcoming base to explore this magnificent coastline and beyond. Craster is steeped in tradition and centred on the ‘picture-postcard’ harbour, where visitors should try the smoked Craster kippers from the smokery or the local pub. The coastline and inland is peppered with friendly villages and castles, where visitors will find they have to return to enjoy what is reputedly the most unpopulated and unspoilt county in England. Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

Rowan Cottage is situated in an idyllic little fishing village on the Northumberland Coast with access to wonderful walks, castles and beaches from its door. It is let down a bit by the showers, one of which is dangerous and therefore unusable (it lurches from scalding hot to freezing cold regardless of whether others are using water or not) and the other has very poor water pressure. We were disappointed to note that other guests had pointed this out yet it was still a problem and detracted from an otherwise lovely break. Potential renters should note that there seems to be no mobile phone service in the village, which may or may not be a plus point!

For us Rowan Cottage has become a very dear and familiar place of comfort that satisfies our tastes and needs whilst staying in Craster. Every year we return to beautiful Northumberland, and this is where we always choose to stay. That probably says it all.
