What a little gem! The perfect place to get away from it all, to find peace, quiet and contentment in a beautiful setting. If you want to see people, Pitlochry is only a 20 minute drive away. The local village. Kirkmichael, is a delightful 2 mile walk away through woods and fields. There you'll find two pubs and a little shop/café. There are so many beautiful walks right from the doorstep that you don't really need to go out and about. Perfect if you have a dog. The cottage itself is extremely warm and cosy, and well equipped. You can enjoy your morning coffee overlooking the river, watching the red squirrel who visits every day; there are lots of deer to be seen in the vicinity too. I'd definitely come back.

We had a really lovely week at River Cottage in October and it comes highly recommended! The location right by the river was fabulous and very relaxing, and we saw red squirrels every day which kept us entertained. The day we arrived it was after 9pm and the cottage was very warm and cosy with chocolate muffins waiting for us! Andy our host was very welcoming and keen to check we had everything we needed. We were particularly impressed with finding some groceries in the cottage to start us off. The cottage is very well placed to drive north, south, east or west for mountain walking or to see the sights. All in all we had a great time and I'm sure we will be back :-).

By far the best aspects of River cottage were watching red squirrels and numerous birds outside and the lovely walks directly from the cottage door. Also, the amazing places to visit, we loved GlenShee, Pitlochry, The Birks of Aberfeldy to name a few. However, the cottage itself for us had a few drawbacks which left us disappointed. The decking area was not enclosed as described in the website, so we had to watch our dog carefully and my vision of relaxing on the decking was compromised because of that. However, the outdoor furniture was inferior with only two small metal chairs and tiny metal table. A missed opportunity given the amazing wildlife viewing to be had. Indoors the cottage was only superficially clean meaning retrieving the dog toys from under the sofa which were filthy was not pleasant! Some basic kitchen items seemed missing such as decent knives, scissors, and any items to cook food in the oven. No bin bag was also a pain. The hoover and the washing machine were both poor. However, the worst aspect was the constant smell of oil from the boiler. The open plan aspect meant that downstairs the smell was constant. Meaning we had to have the windows open most of the time. The WiFi was linked to the owners and as a result was intermittent. Not a huge problem for us but could be if you expect it to work all the time, we figured that when the owners were using it our connection was lost as it was only an issue at certain times when we knew the owner was in. The lounge furniture was not hugely comfortable for an evenings relaxation and the mat slipped a lot on the wooden floor. I honestly cannot imagine four people staying in this cottage, if nothing else waiting half an hour for the hot water to reheat after each shower would mean at least 2 hours if everyone wanted a shower! Plus the second bedroom is tiny and probably only suitable for children. I know this review makes us sound picky, we had a great holiday in a beautiful part of the world and will definitely be back but probably not to River Cottage unless it has a little spruce up.
