Description

This contemporary cottage ticks all the right boxes for a perfect beachside stay in the quaint coastal village of Allonby.

Once a hive of activity and frequented by smugglers, Allonby, with cobbled lanes, Victorian charm and a history of herring fishing, has a long standing seaside heritage. Porthole Cottage has its own place in history; this former stables used to house the village donkeys and commands a prominent position right on the beachside. Now converted, this stunning holiday home offers all the indulgences and stylish interior design you could hope for from a 21st century, seaside hideaway.
All on one level, Porthole Cottage comfortably sleeps up to six guests in two spacious double bedrooms and one twin bedded room, which makes it the perfect accommodation for couples and families. The property offers contemporary and tasteful décor but is still in keeping with its coastal beginnings; the round porthole that looks out to the village offers an ever-present reminder of this property’s seaside heritage. On sunny days, guests can enjoy sitting out in the courtyard garden, complete with table and chairs, or continue through the gate 50 yards to reach the famous Allonby Beach. After a long stroll along the shore, you can throw a couple of logs on the wood burner and put your feet up in front of the TV, while enjoying a wide range of movies and box-sets courtesy of Netflix, included at no extra charge. The property benefits from lots of natural daylight, thanks to the roof light windows, and this continues throughout the property including the bathroom, where you can find a full size bath for a soak after a long day of exploring. A well equipped kitchen finishes off this stunning property.
This popular sleepy seaside village on the North West coast of Cumbria, nestled between Maryport and Silloth, has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village shop, tea rooms and fish and chip shop are within easy reach on foot, as are the two village pubs, the first of which, is just 50 yards across the road. With its long sandy beaches, Allonby offers great views over the Solway Firth to the mountains of Southern Scotland. For those seeking some more rugged outdoor adventure, this Cumbrian hotspot is only a 10 mile drive to the Lake District National Park and 16 miles to the nearest Lake, Bassenthwaite, home to the famous Lakes Distillery offering guided tours and tastings. The Lake District Wildlife Park, with over 100 species of exotic animals, makes a fun-filled day out for all ages. Beach 50 yards. Shop ¼ mile, pub and restaurant 100 yards.

Stayed in porthole cottage last week in June 2018. Cottage was very clean. We had a problem on the first day with the fridge door not closing properly. The owner was very sympathetic and apologetic and arranged for a joiner to fix the door the following day. Overnight we had to prop the fridge door closed with an ironing board ! This was necessary as the temperature hit 29 degrees C during the day. The cottage is ideally placed for Maryport, Silloth, Cockermouth and Keswick. We are all OAPs and have various limiting disabilities so fell walking was not on our list of events. The weather was hot but being on the coast we were blessed with a cooling breeze. Facilities in Allonby are poor and any shopping we needed was purchased from either Silloth or Maryport. All in all a relaxing holiday with all mod cons provided at the cottage.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay, and we hope that the incident with the fridge did not cause you too much inconvenience. I am pleased that my brothers idea for the temporary ironing board fix keep your beers cold and didn’t spoil your stay. As you said, thankfully we were able to repair the issue the following day. It's always lovely on the Solway coast, especially when the sun is shining, and you definitely picked a good week weather wise. As you say, Allonby has limited shopping, but thankfully Maryport is only a 10 minute drive away. We hope to welcome you back again in the future, although we unfortunately can’t guarantee the weather.

Lovely cottage in a pretty location. The village of Allonby is lovely but out of season not much going on with neither of the pubs seemingly serving evening meals through the week, that said its a really easy commute to Maryport and also Cockermouth( although watch out parking in Cockermouth can be dreadful). The cottage itself is well equipped, bright, clean and comfortable. The welcome wine and dog biscuits were a nice touch. The only downside was I felt the garden fence could have been a bit higher as the neighbours seemed to pass by regularly making it less than private if you wanted to sit out with. drink. Brilliant holiday

Response on behalf of the owner; Thanks for your review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Porthole Cottage and we look forward to hopefully welcoming you back again. With regards to the fence, we are sorry that you felt a lack of privacy and we hope this wont deter any future stays.

Porthole cottage was a lovely, clean, comfortable and modern holiday accommodation. It was a great base to visit the west coast and the beautiful lake District. My only wish for Porthole cottage would be an additional bathroom/toilet as 6 people taking turns with 1 bathroom needed a bit of co-ordination in the mornings, however it wouldn't stop me from staying there again or recommending it to family and friends.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thanks for your review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Porthole Cottage. Unfortunately, an additional bathroom desirable as is would result in the loss of a bedroom or substantial reduction in size. We hope that the queue for the bathroom didn’t spoil your stay too much and we hope to welcome you back again soon.

Beautiful modern cottage. Comfortable and clean. Exactly as the pictures show. Lovely welcome pack upon arrival. Myself and my Mum felt so at home here and the dogs loved it with it being so close to the beach. Most of the lakes within 20-60 mins away. We loved ennerdale.
