Pines Cottage is tucked away in the picturesque area of St Margaret’s Bay, Dover. With plenty of space for up to eight guests, with four en-suite bedrooms, a modern fully equipped kitchen and living/dining area, all on one level. The views of the gardens, woodland and sea are spectacular from the patio, and the beach and coastal trails are on the doorstep. Guests can enjoy the 6 acres of Pines Garden (open to the public until dusk) and its tea room.
The owner has introduced and incorporated up-cycled, recycled and reused items and elements in every room. All carpet tiles use nylon recycled from waste off cuts, returned carpets and salvaged fishing nets, whilst the hallway barrier mats are made from recycled car tyres. The interior walls were finished with a magnesium oxide board, and painted with a paint which uses no solvents.
Pines Garden is an organically-managed garden which has a lake, a grass labyrinth and beds growing food crops and edible flowers. Founded by ’Flowering’ Fred Cleary in 1971, the garden contains many beautiful and unusual mature trees and shrubs, including walnut, fig and pomegranate trees. It uses both old and new models for sustainable land management, and the garden has been run organically since 2002. Emphasis is placed on working in harmony with the natural systems, composting, recycling and learning how to use natural predators to control pests.
There is a a pub/restaurant on the beach, just a 2-minute walk, and booking is advised. There is a bus service that runs to and from St Margaret’s-at-Cliffe village, and there is a train station at Martin Mill which is 3 miles away.
