English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

This 18th-century weaver’s cottage provides an excellent base from which to explore all that this extensive location has to offer, with walks from the doorstep.

Situated along a quiet, narrow, cobbled street, where the Narrowgates cotton mill once stood, this quaint, 18th-century weaver’s cottage has been lovingly restored into a fantastic holiday home. This semi-detached cottage has been beautifully presented, with the owner taking great care to ensure that the property maintains all of its charm and character, whilst at the same time providing all contemporary and comfortable features of a holiday home.
Situated within 2 acres of natural land, and enjoying an elevated patio area, this property is deceptively spacious. On the ground floor is a cosy living room with wood burner, where guests can snuggle down with a glass of wine in the evening. There is also a charming kitchen/dining room with handmade units, original quarry tiled floor and an oil fired Aga. To the rear of the property is a conservatory, which is the ideal place to retreat to for a quiet read. Upstairs are three beautifully co-ordinated bedrooms, and a contemporary family bathroom. Perfect for a night in after a busy day exploring this extensive location, all the TVs come pre-loaded with music, over 300 movies to watch and are wired for guests to have fun when they bring their own Playstation or Xbox.
Narrowgates Cottage is located on the edge of the village of Barley, which is within the Forest of Bowland, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village has two good pubs, a café, children’s playground and picnic area. Barley is situated close to Pendle Hill and is a popular starting point for walkers who want to follow in the footsteps of the famous Pendle Witches. With many cycle routes available from the doorstep, and a bike rack at the property, this holiday home is every outdoor enthusiasts dream. Surrounded by beautiful Lancashire countryside, it is the ideal base from which to explore the Ribble Valley with its stunning scenery, pretty villages and welcoming country pubs. The bustling market town of Clitheroe, which is considered to be the capital of the Ribble Valley District, is just 8 miles away and in addition to its Norman castle it also offers a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants.
Walking and cycling are two of the main activities that bring visitors to this picturesque area, but there is also golf and fishing within a short drive. Thanks to its proximity to the M65 and M6, this also makes a good base for a touring holiday. The Lake District, Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Fylde Coast, whose popular resorts include Blackpool, Morecambe and Lytham St Annes, are all within an hour’s drive. Shop 4 miles, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

It is probably the best cottage we have stayed in. We only had 4 nights and really didn't want to leave. It has a lovely atmosphere, really relaxing.

I would highly recommend Narrowgates cottage. It is absolutely beautiful and in an ideal spot. Neil and Jane are the best hosts, they have thought of everything you need. Will definitely be returning in the future.

I recently stayed at Narrowgates cottage over the bank holiday weekend with friends and their children. The cottage is absolutely stunning inside and out. It was clear the owners have put a lot of thought and effort into the cottage and everything you would need was provided (condiments, board games, etc). The personal gifts that were provided for the two children (pepper pig lunch box and an infant toy) with personalised messages to them was just so lovely and a nice surprise. The adults very much enjoyed the wine and local food (bacon and sausages) as well! I have recommended the cottage to everyone! I will most definitely be returning again in the future. The phone signal was not great however the owners were very accommodating and helpful in sorting the WIFI for our stay. We could not ask for more. Great stay for families and friends.

Loved our time here, even though the weather was not great - the outside space is amazing but remained unused throughout our stay. We were made to feel very welcome, with thoughtful welcome gifts for our children and local produce for us. Any issues were dealt with swiftly and we even got to visit the lambs at Angela's farm.

A marvellous cottage. We have stayed in many cottages over the years and Narrowgates rates as one of the very best. The effort, cost and obvious love the owners have put into the cottage makes it outstanding. Everything from the nick nacks to the furniture and the bedding to the cooking equipment is quality. The location is also great with walks from the doorstep to two good pubs a few minutes walk away. We both cooked in the cottage and ate at the pubs and enjoyed having the choice to be able to do that. We rather stupidly left a heavy bag in a bedroom upon leaving and the owners were gracious enough to bring it to Manchester on the train to save us returning. Narrowgates is a home from home, so much so that we are returning next year.

I have 2 small dogs and have rented a lot of properties over the past 25 years. This was by far the most outstanding I have stayed in, nothing left to chance everything was catered for to the most incredible detail. I cannot say enough in favour if this property and its owners, the decor is fabulous!!! Jo Malone diffusers everywhere brilliant. They even put treats for my dogs with their names on such attention to detail !!! Location is ideal for dog walks and right outside the door 30 feet away is a lovely riverside footpath so ideal for a quick morning or bedtime walk before you tackle the Ogden reservoirs or Pendle Hill. We will be back absolutely superb, thank you !!

Narrow-gates surpassed my expectations by miles! It was utterly sumptuous, lavishly equipped and a delight! From doggy chocolates to a full English breakfast [bacon, sausages, eggs and fresh bread] to the gorgeous fragrances from the Jo Molone diffusers - your every need was considered. Useful items like torches in each key drawer, stair gates, good quality body wash and shampoo dispensers and the ultra thick cosy towels just made our stay even more enjoyable. The quality of the equipment was exceptional and made the fortnight really easy and pleasurable. Having access to the fabulous multi level paved area, [with four different seating areas] I followed the sun when it deigned to shine!] We also had a fair amount of rain. So the back gate and hose spray was invaluable to clean the dogs after muddy walks. The huge Aga was interesting and frankly easy to use [never used one before - but the beef was perfect!] and with the hanging airer above, all the washing dried overnight - also available were dog towels along with leads, poop bags, extra biscuits and even dog bed! the rear 'sun/conservatory was cool and a perfect place for the dogs to sleep. The furnishings, style and attention to detail were a pleasure to see - the massive light fitting in the double bedroom was fabulous! The helpful information was clear and relevant and the WiFi signal good as there is no mobile signal but a landline is available. The area is beautiful with lots of easy walks along the river, up to Black Moss Reservoir and of course the drag up Pendle Hill. There are two pubs serving excellent meals and beer. I could go on but lastly the cleanliness was top standard - everything shone - I would certainly return.
