Moorhens Cottage is set on the beautiful Lower Mill Estate which is a lovely family and dog friendly holiday location. The kids loved the outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts and table tennis and we all enjoyed canoeing on the Somerford Lagoon, fishing on Mill Lake and the lovely walks around the estate and its lakes. Moorhens Cottage is a cosy cottage with everything you really need for a self catering holiday. It was very nice to have little extras such as dishwasher tablets and extra toilet rolls provided and thank you for the welcome bottle of fizz, chocolates and doggie treats!! This is not a complaint as everyone has different preferences but the mattress in the larger double was very hard and not comfortable at all which made my back ache and have disrupted sleep. I would still recommend staying and would return as it was a lovely area with great facilities for all the family.

Enjoyed our stay at Moorhens cottage, but felt that the whole complex and the specific cottage did not match the description. The description seemed to suggest 'a few cottages around a lake' .... there are hundreds of close packed cottages around several lakes. The photos and description also suggest that the decking overlooks the water ... which it does, but that is the Thames millstream (3 foot wide & 6 inches deep) .... the lake is the other side of the road and behind other properties. We felt that it would have helped if we had been warned that tennis, table tennis, equipment had to be hired ... we could easily have brought that with us had we known. Having said that ... cottage was very well equipped throughout, very clean, quiet and all (bar a couple of light bulbs) fully working. Property included a double canoe & we enjoyed using it on the lake and swimming in the pool. Our party of 5 + dog had a great weekend.

Moorhens was clean, well designed and made us feel at home and relaxed instantly. All the places we wanted to visit were 40 minutes drive or less away so an ideal location. All the facilities in the house worked well so everything ran smoothly and the high door handles were perfect for preventing little ones escaping.

The cottage was better than expected after reading some of the reviews. It was clean apart from a few cobwebs from the harvest spiders here and there and dust on the back of doors where they had been open constantly during cleaning which didn't bother me. There was a 3 seater and 2 seater sofa and a small tub chair in the lounge area which was a bit restricting for 6 adults, not bad for us as we were all family. This meant one chair each with no way of lounging as you do on holiday. There was a large dining table which was fine for our family meals. All the usual things you need for holiday like dishwasher and fridge/freezer, hob and oven were fine. The only problem we had was with one of the toilets where the seat wasn't attached properly which wasn't resolved during the week I was there despite being reported on arrival. Beds are 2 standard double and 2 singles. Be careful of the doubles which are pretty but have wooden bits sticking out at thigh height at the bottom and I still have the bruises 2 weeks later. There is not much space between the wardrobes and the bed in one of the doubles and so it is natural to walk closer to the bedframe. I tucked the quilt around the edge of them to stop more injuries. It is not the fault of the owner, just a design flaw in the bed frame. The mattresses are very hard and we had to lie on top of the quilt just to add a slight bit of comfort. This being said, I would stay here again but a kingsize bed with a more comfortable mattress would make it feel more a luxury holiday experience. I have super kingsize bed at home and so these beds felt very small, however, if you are used to a double then they would be ok for you.
