If peace and tranquillity be the order of the day, then look no further. Nestling in the stunning Esk Valley, these holiday properties have been lovingly converted from 200 year old farm buildings and are situated just across the courtyard from the owners’ farmhouse which dates from the 12th century. Converted from a former granary, The Granary (ref W41008) occupies the first floor of a detached barn conversion, with views towards Castleton Rigg. Stylish and delightfully furnished, retaining many original features with a vaulted ceiling, low beams and solid oak floors. The Carthouse (ref W41503) is spacious and occupies the ground floor of the detached barn conversion, whilst The Byre (ref W7733) is an attractive single storey, detached property with a multi-fuel stove in the living room, and offers wonderful views over the dale. They are all tastefully furnished and decorated and offer excellent holiday accommodation. Ideally situated in the beautiful North York Moors National Park, a scenic drive along the country roads takes you to the historic port of Whitby. The area abounds with smugglers coves and quaint fishing villages untouched by the passing years. An excellent base for exploring the surrounding area, with the Yorkshire coast and Heartbeat country both easily accessible. Walking is available direct from the door, with fishing and riding nearby. Castleton is 1 mile away with all amenities including supermarket, bank and post office. A magical part of the world at any time of the year. Properties W41008, W41503 and W7733 can be booked together for larger parties. Shops, pub and restaurant 1.5 miles.

We had a great time. The cottage was perfect for us, and included everything we needed. Nicely furnished & very secluded. The local village has a shop, a pub and an excellent tea room. Everything we needed, basically.

Not at all relaxing with sharing the property with someone staying above the Cart House, - in the Grannery. Would not stay again or reccomend to anyone. Being in a complex of other Holiday rentals, as completely put us off staying in one like this one in the future. Not how we want to spend our holiday time. The Cart House were we stayed was Not relaxing even less when you hear noises from above! Not at all sound proof! Views out of the Cart House was poor, you could only see the car park and the owners house from the front. The back was a sloping peace of grass, nothing realy to look out onto, from the small bedroom window. The Bathroom was clinical, as it was a wet room!

Response on behalf of the Owner; We are sorry that this couple didn’t enjoy themselves. Everyone has an opinion on what constitutes a good holiday and our cottage obviously wasn’t theirs. They had the cottage – on the ground floor of this converted farm building, as detailed in the description – for three nights before the upstairs guests arrived, and we were in our house opposite. Yet at no time did they complain and on departure, as they returned the key, I asked, “Was everything all right?” and he said that everything had been lovely. It is always a disappointment when guests do not say there is a problem. I then noticed the guest book comments contradicted what they had said, and moreover in this review. Regarding the view from the small bedroom window, (which can be seen in the cottage description pictures, the small, downstairs, left hand window), it is indeed as they described – “The back was a sloping peace of grass, nothing really to look out onto, from the small bedroom window.” You can often see rabbits and pheasants. The Carthouse and the Granary above it are as described in the details of both properties. The conversion took place in 2005 and well superseded Part E of building regulations. In the 13 years that we’ve been operating we have had two complaints about noise – including this one - and in both cases the problem has been heavy footed guests upstairs or barking dogs downstairs. In general, there isn’t a problem – this is an apartment and cannot be completely soundproofed. Our third cottage (of three) is completely stand-alone – if you have dogs who bark a lot I recommend staying in the Byre, rather than in the Carthouse.
