Mill Cottage, located in the charming village of Shiskine on the Isle of Arran, is a beautifully renovated and thoughtfully extended traditional cottage that offers a perfect blend of character, comfort, and space for families or groups. Surrounded by Arran’s stunning landscapes, this welcoming retreat provides a relaxed base from which to explore the island while enjoying a true home-from-home atmosphere.
At the heart of the cottage is the open-plan living space, designed to bring everyone together. The kitchen is well-equipped for preparing anything from quick breakfasts to family feasts, flowing seamlessly into the dining area where you can gather to share meals and plan the day ahead. The lounge—affectionately known as the snug—offers a cosy spot to unwind, whether that’s curling up with a book or enjoying a quiet evening after a day of exploring. Extending from this space is the bright and airy sunroom, a real highlight of the cottage. With patio doors opening directly onto the enclosed garden, it’s the perfect place to relax with a morning coffee or watch the light change throughout the day.
The garden itself is fully enclosed and laid to grass, making it ideal for children to play safely and freely. It’s a peaceful outdoor space where you can soak up the fresh island air—though you may occasionally be joined by some curious visitors, as the neighbours’ chickens are known to wander in from time to time, adding a touch of rural charm and a bit of amusement to your stay.
Also on the ground floor is a comfortable double bedroom, offering convenient accommodation for those who prefer to avoid stairs, along with a modern bathroom featuring a bath with an overhead shower. Upstairs, the cottage continues to cater well for families, with two twin-bedded rooms providing flexible sleeping arrangements. The landing area has been cleverly set up as a study space, ideal for catching up on emails, reading, or simply enjoying a quiet moment away from the main living areas.
Shiskine is perfectly positioned for exploring Arran’s many attractions. Nearby, you’ll find the Machrie Moor Standing Stones, a fascinating prehistoric site set against a dramatic backdrop. The west coast beaches, including those at Blackwaterfoot, offer beautiful sandy stretches ideal for walks, picnics, and even a paddle on warmer days. For walkers, the island provides everything from gentle coastal paths to more challenging hill routes.
For adults, Arran is home to excellent distilleries. The Arran Distillery in Lochranza offers guided tours and tastings of its renowned single malts, while the newer Lagg Distillery on the south of the island specialises in peated whisky and provides a fantastic visitor experience. Add to this the 7 golf courses you can play on, the cycling routes, wildlife spotting, and cosy cafés; Mill Cottage then becomes the perfect base for an unforgettable island escape for all.
