Meal Hoose is a charming self-catering retreat for two (plus a baby under 2) set on the upper level of a listed old grain store in the historic market town of Gatehouse of Fleet. Dating from the late 1770s, the building was originally used to store salt, grain and other produce. Its solid stone outer walls and traditional character pay tribute to the craftsmanship of its original builders. In 2026 the building has been thoughtfully converted into a comfortable residence, while retaining its fascinating heritage. Inside, Meal Hoose offers a spacious super king-size bedroom, which can be arranged with twin beds when requested in advance. There is a bathroom with a shower, alongside a welcoming open-plan living and dining area where guests can relax after a day of exploring. The well-equipped kitchen has everything needed to prepare leisurely breakfasts, packed lunches and evening meals. There is a bike store at the property too and for the dogs, there is a commercial dog bath, so no more dirty pooches. Just 50 metres from the property is the entrance to Garries Park, providing easy access to an enjoyable woodland walk. Meal Hoose is ideally placed for discovering Gatehouse of Fleet, Kirkcudbright, Laurieston and Castle Douglas, within the beautiful rural heart of Dumfries and Galloway. The surrounding National Scenic Area and magnificent Galloway Forest Park offer wonderful opportunities for hill walking, mountain biking, fishing, wildlife watching and stargazing beneath famously dark skies. History enthusiasts can explore Cardoness Castle or visit Kirkcudbright, Scotland’s Artists’ Town, with its galleries, independent shops and attractive harbour. In Laurieston, stop at The Gallery to enjoy coffee and cake, and browse a collection of local photography. The coastline is perfect for relaxed days beside the sea. Brighouse Bay has a sweeping sandy beach suitable for swimming, canoeing, windsurfing and kite flying. Carrick Bay offers easy access for launching dinghies, canoes and paddleboards, while Sandgreen Bay has designated areas for swimming, sailing, windsurfing and motorboats. Cardoness Shore and Mossyard also offer beautiful sandy bays and memorable coastal walks. Whether your interests include golf, sailing, cycling, walking, wildlife or local history, Meal Hoose provides a peaceful and characterful base. Above all, it is a lovely place to slow down, relax and enjoy the natural beauty of southwest Scotland.
