Description

In a secluded position yet within easy reach of many attractions, this property is a great base for a family holiday.

Nestling in a secluded, wooded position overlooking the River Dee valley, this superior stone house has been totally restored to offer the finest facilities and provide every comfort to ensure an enjoyable stay. All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms and fine views, and the drawing room has an open fire making the property ideal for all year round holidays. Herds of red deer, stags and hinds, graze by the river during the evenings giving a feeling of tranquillity amidst the beautiful Highland scenery. It is situated in Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, within the Cairngorm National Park and offers access to some of the best walking and climbing in Scotland, with the challenging Cairngorm mountains within easy reach. Fishing, stalking and shooting may be arranged through the estate. Winter sports are also catered for with skiing at Glenshee only a 20-minute drive.
For the less energetic a visit to the 16th-century Crathes Castle and Gardens at Banchory (40 miles) offers an exciting day out. The gardens provide a wonderful display at any time of the year with great yew hedges and a fascinating presentation of the art of topiary dating from 1702. There is also a children’s adventure playground. Closer to Mar House is Balmoral Castle – the Royal family’s Highland residence which offers the opportunity to pony trek and the chance to view various exhibitions, including one on the local wildlife. Golf is available at Braemar only 4 miles away and there are also excellent courses at Ballater and Aboyne.
Inverness is within easy reach and offers many attractions for all the family. Unusual places of interest include the Kiltmaker Centre, where a small visitor centre explains the whole process of making tartan, and the novel Balnain House, which explores the development of Highland music. Inverness Castle, perched above the river, offers the Castle Garrison Encounter, an entertaining interactive exhibition in which the visitor plays the role of a new recruit in the 18th-century Hanoverian army. Shop and pub 3 miles.

Loved the house and situation . It is our second time here . Lovely walks from the house with lots of wildlife to see including deer and red squirrel. Very near Liinn of Dee which is superb. Very quiet and peaceful situation . Cosy comfortable lounge . Kitchen very well equipped . There is nothing you would need although we did take our own slow cooker . Extra fridge in room off kitchen which is useful for beer and wine !! . TV reception fairly good for main channels . WFI reception good and worked throughout the house . We found a lovely hotel / bar Moorfield hotel on the edge of Braemar overlooking the Highland game site . Lovely owners and comfortable in and out in the garden . Sky sport available if you need to watch an important event / match . Fife arms hotel in village lovely but very expensive .Invercauld hotel open but being renovated and bar shut on Friday Saturday . Lots to see . Don’t miss Invercauld bridge . The views of the Dee are stunning . Balmoral well worth visiting . Overall lovely holiday .

We really enjoyed staying at Mar House. It was very clean and the kitchen is well equipped. It is an ideal base to explore from, especially if you want to go out walking the hills. The back door opens into a boiler, utility, boot room and is a handy place to hang boots and coats to dry. The start of the week we stayed was cold, but the oil-fired heating and wood fire meant the house was warm and cosy. The hot water to the 4 bathrooms seems to be limitless, so when your entire family wants baths after a long hike, then no problem or fighting about who goes first. The entire area is beautiful and peaceful. Braemar has a good village shop (a Coop) and a butcher. The Bothy (by Braemar Mountain Sports) is a good place for lunch and teas, and on a sunny day the terrace at the back overlooking the river is a lovely place to sit and eat their delicious cake after a long walk.

Another fabulous holiday at Mar House. We have been visiting now for 10 years. Sadly we see that the cleanliness is not as good this year as has been our experience in previous years. It was one of the things that was always amazing just how clean the house was. Lots of cobwebs this year and just not as clean generally. Also, the house is sadly getting a bit dated. New flooring in the bathrooms so some attempt is being made to improve things. This is is only natural with a house that has a heavy foot fall. We still love it and will definitely be back. Just sad to see the decline over the years. Still out favourite place though!

Great to have space and privacy. Scenery and walking fantastic. Bit of a problem with showers which hopefully will be fixed. Lovely roaring fire and plentiful supplies of logs. Good to have all bedrooms with en suite but would be better if ALL bedrooms had twin beds rather than 2 doubles (our party of 7 had three mothers with 3 adult daughters). Other than that, we had a great holiday and love Mar House.
