This property is part of our English Country Cottages collection

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

This beautiful Grade II listed thatched property is full of character and is just 200 yards from the quayside – it is simply exquisite!

Swathed in wisteria this pretty thatched holiday cottage is located in the heart of the village, 200 yards from the picturesque quayside of Stoke Gabriel. Dating back to 14th century medieval times, Laurel Cottage is Grade II listed and retains much of its olde worlde charm with a pretty interior and cottage-style garden front and rear. Just 4 miles from many golden sandy beaches of the English Riviera, and seaside towns of Torquay, Paignton, Goodrington and Brixham. Historic Totnes, 4 miles, has an abundance of independent shops, bistros, health food shops and farmers market. Dartmouth, nestling on the River Dart, is 9 miles by road and small ferry across the river. Shops 50 yards.

Beamed living room, rugs on tiled floor, large gas woodburner, dining area. Well-equipped fitted kitchen, breakfast area, French door to patio. First floor: Double bedroom, 5ft bed, TV/DVD, en-suite bathroom, power shower cubicle and toilet. Twin bedroom with Victorian brass bedsteads, TV/DVD. Shower room with toilet.

Laurel Cottage is beautifully presented and real credit to the owners. If you want a cosy romantic getaway with a lovely pub across the road, and great local walks, this is it! Many thanks to the owners for their helpful advice before we arrived. Regards Duncan & Lisa

Laurel Cottage provides ample space for 4 people. Garden and front aspects sadly very overgrown making the property dark inside downstairs and looking generally shy of any real maintenance or upkeep. Rear garden could be a pleasant and useful space with some work. We left the property cleaner than we found it.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We were surprised to hear your comments, when we spoke to you some hours after you arrived, you appeared to be delighted with the cottage and the village. The hedges and gardens are maintained regularly with care to maintain privacy. Every year we invest substantial amounts in our listed cottage, within the last 6 months we have replaced the oven, bathroom sink, tiles, worktops, landing and stair carpet, bought a new garden bench and had some custom built shutters fitted. This is not a complete list but fairly typical of what we do annually to maintain standards. The pervious 2 reviews scored us 10 for cleanliness, but as we said in our welcome call both ourselves and our house keeper would have been ready to sort out anything you were not entirely satisfied with had you contacted us.

We enjoyed a lovely relaxing week at Laurel Cottage. We were able to park the car and travel on the daily bus to Paignton. Both of the local pubs served enjoyable food. Every one in the village made us feel at home and were very welcoming. Our dogs were made welcome which was important to us. The owner phoned us on the day of arrival which we found welcoming and got our holiday off to a good start. Would certainly recommend and stay again

We would not stay at this cottage again as it is really dirty and did not even meet the basic standards of cleanilness. There is no parking at the cottage, we did not want to pay anymore to park, so be prepared to be walking up and down the hill to get to your car, even in the pouring rain. Stoke Gabriel, is however beautiful, theres a real serenity about the place. We had good food at the Cot Inn in Dartington and at No.7 in Torquay and can recommend both places for good food. Laurel Cottage is definitely not a place for us to stay.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; We consider your review to be untrue and unfair; you have also added your review 10 weeks after staying at the property. The guests that stayed in the cottage 2 weeks previously gave us a score of 9/10 and 10/10 and the guests staying after you gave us a score of 8/10 and 10/10. During your stay we had numerous texts from you and calls usually after lunch or late at night. In some of the calls you were incoherent. Our Housekeeper visited you 3 times including twice on Sunday which the Housekeeper said you were very rude to her. We spoke to the Agency and we were informed we could ask you to leave the cottage. We decided against this hoping that with our care and our beautiful cottage would persuade you to agree with the scores of our other guests, unfortunately despite our efforts this did not happen.
