Rural, secluded and surrounded by fields, Heckberry Cottage is detached and adjacent to the owner’s home, and is the perfect location for a quiet and peaceful relaxing break. Situated within 6 acres of the owner’s land, and accessed by a rough track, yet less than a mile away from the village centre. Heckberry Cottage dates back to the 1800s and retains much of the character of an older building, but with plenty of contemporary features too. The living and dining area are open plan to the galley kitchen, and are comfortable and practical with a large multi-fuel burner that heats the whole house. The views from the ground floor look straight across the fields out to the Weardale valley and are totally uninterrupted, apart from the horses in the field opposite! On the first floor are a shower room with shower cubicle, as well as a comfortable double bedroom and compact bunk room that is ideal for children.
The cottage is a real find for couples to enjoy a romantic break, small families wanting to explore the local area or guests who enjoy a walking or cycling holiday. With numerous established public footpaths that lead right from the door and through the fields, this is a walker’s paradise. The Weardale Way passes through the owner’s grounds and is a very popular route, as is the short walk into the centre of St John’s Chapel. Boasting two village pubs, a tearoom, café and small supermarket, St John’s Chapel has a thriving community that offers a great welcome to visitors all year round. Only 12 miles from Stanhope, guests also have the opportunity to explore this popular Weardale town and take a visit to the Dales Centre which offers plenty to see and do.
Killhope Lead Mining Museum is another popular destination for families and is only a little over 5 miles away and definitely worth a visit. Also recommended is a trip to the small Cumbrian town of Alston which shares the title of being the highest market town in England. Alston boasts tearooms, a farmers market and local pubs, and is a popular stop off for cyclists enjoying a ride through the counties of Northumberland, Cumbria and County Durham. A little further afield but still within around an hour’s drive, guests can visit the cathedral city of Durham, the Lake District and Northumberland National Park. Don’t miss Hadrian’s Wall for ancient history, Roman forts and settlements, the Durham Heritage Coast for fabulous beaches and Newcastle upon Tyne for culture, including The Sage and a great day out shopping. Warm, welcoming and traditional, Heckberry Cottage is the perfect retreat for guests looking to enjoy a quiet break at any time of year. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Really enjoyed our stay in this charming cottage. Lovely to arrive to find the fire lit and a tray with biscuits, bread and fresh free-range eggs waiting for us. Jane, the owner came over when we arrived to make sure we were happy with everything. She and her husband Tony were welcoming and friendly hosts. We enjoyed watching the rabbits and chickens from the living room window. Scenery is wonderful. Village about 15 minutes walk away with a shop providing most essentials and two pubs. Log burner was great, put out plenty of heat and ran all the radiators and hot water. Nice old furniture in the main bedroom. Plenty of good walks nearby and its a good base from which to explore Weardale.

This was the 2nd visit for us this year. Absolutely love it here, cosy, relaxed & the perfect place to spend our Anniversary. Lovely owners & bread, butter, jam & milk on arrival. Bit of a dodgy road down to the cottage, but worth the panic 😂 Just perfect & hope to return soon xx

Sadly no photos, we don't do that! Lovely 2-bed workers cottage complete with log burner. All bathroom stuff provided plus hairdrier and towels. We didn't use the car for 4 days. Co-op, coffee shops and pub within walking distance, either over the fields or along main road. Very friendly population. Beautiful area. Would defiinitely book again. Lovely owner who left a marvellous tray of goodies on arrival, cob bread, butter, biscuits etc. Thoroughly enjoyed our 3 nights.

Arrived at Heckberry Cottage on Sunday 30th December 2018, when we arrived the log burner was lit and we had been left a welcome pack of fresh bread, milk, butter, jam and a bottle of prosecco. Lovely touch. There was also a Christmas tree and the cottage was decorated. First impression was good. The cottage itself is truly amazing and there isn't anything you couldn't find. I also seen some deers on New years eve morning right outside the cottage. We visited the Golden Lion pub a few times, brill pub and good food. We will be returning to the cottage and the Host was very friendly.

What a great week we had! The owner was there to greet us and had lit the woodburner and put our electric blanket on too. Our dogs were welcomed and it was great to know that we could relax and not worry about the tiled floor getting doggy footprints on it, easily wiped away! There was a lovely tea tray for us with tea, coffee, milk, butter, bread and marmalade. The location was fabulous and we enjoyed revisiting old haunts and discovering new ones. We know the area fairly well but it was our first time staying in St John's Chapel. There are endless walks on the door step, and 2 welcoming pubs within a short walk from Heckberry Cottage. We took our slow cooker with us as it's great for having something warm after a long walk. the only other thing that would be a benefit is a small indoor clothes airer, certainly not a major issue though! We would love to go back and would highly recommend it.

The cottage is in an excellent location with plenty of footpaths from the doorstep. The shops and pubs are within 10mins walk. The starter pack was excellent, as was the introduction from the owner on arrival. The superfast broadband was surprising for such a rural spot. On the downside, the lack of a fully-enclosed garden meant the dogs had to be on-lead at all times. The bed was too soft/saggy for our liking and vehicular access is problematic. We had to retract the car mirrors to get along the lane.

Heckberry is a lovely little cottage in a fabulous location. The owners are very friendly and generous, from the provision of some food essentials to the abundant supply of logs and coal for heating. There is also an abundance of wildlife just outside the door of the really quiet cottage. There are plenty of walks in the immediate area and the village, with its well stocked small co-op and two pubs and cafés, is a pleasant 15 minute stroll away. We had a very enjoyable and relaxing stay.

Although the cottage was charming we were disappointed with the garden as not enclosed fully as suggested in the description of the property. Having very small terrier that move very quickly we had to keep them tethered when outside. There was also a problem with parking our car at the cottage as if we had used the track down to the cottage we would have ground the car as it has a rather low suspension. I believe a 4x4 would have been of more use. This did not stop us enjoying our stay but had we known of these two problems we would have not booked the cottage. None the less a charming cottage in lovely countryside.
