Gàrradh an Fhàsaich is a characterful cottage built in the early 20th century attached to an extensive smallholding. The name Gàrradh an Fhàsaich in Gaelic means Garden of the Desert or Wilderness Garden. This lovely cottage is set in maturing gardens of 8.9 acres that have over a thousand trees and multiple types of shrubbery of different ages all planted by the owner and family. Over 50 species of birds have been sighted from the garden area.
The accommodation has charm. The living room is very inviting with a cosy open fire, or electric heater, and is ideal for relaxing in after a day out exploring. There is a characterful cottage kitchen which has a door out to the garden. The handy porch to the front is perfect for storing muddy boots after an adventurous day out with the family. The property is perfect for couples or small families. Those with dogs will particularly enjoy the cottage, grounds and surrounding location. The wild garden attached to the cottage has been created with natural footpaths for visitors to follow and explore the mainly native plant species.
The cottage is set in Fasach, which is a cluster of houses on the eastern side of Glendale. Set just off the road, but because of its sunken nature and being surrounded by trees, you feel completely isolated when in and around the cottage. Situated on a little plateau, the immediate garden isn’t enclosed, but is very private - the large conservation plot of which it is a part of is bounded by a deer fence. There are mature trees and shrubs around the property, but there is an exceptional view a few yards from the front of the house from a bench down across your very own woodland to the Hamara river in the base of the valley, as well as out to sea. There are various spots where you can sit out and look down over tiny Glendale, the bay of Loch Pooltiel and gaze westwards towards the isles of North Uist and Benbecula of the Outer Hebrides.
Being based at Gàrradh an Fhàsaich is to enjoy a wee slice of heaven. It’s an incredibly tranquil place to spend time and enjoy as a retreat from the fast pace of modern life. It is situated in one of the best settings on Skye, and you’re close to many famous spots. Neist Point Lighthouse is only 10 minutes away and there is a restaurant close by in the village open during the day and a world class smart restaurant 3 miles away. Dunvegan Castle and Coral Beach are a little further away and you can be over at the well-known Old Man of Storr, the Quiraing and the Cuillin Hills in less than 30 minutes. After exploring this island, returning to the sanctuary of Gàrradh an Fhàsaich is a pleasure. It’s a wonderful base for a holiday on Skye. Beach 2 miles. Village shop 1 mile, further shops and restaurants in Dunvegan 7 miles.
