This is the sort of house you look forward to returning to after a day in the hills. Once the Grade II listed lodge house to the historic Ffrwdgrech Estate, it has been carefully and beautifully renovated by its owners, retaining its sense of place while creating a striking modern retreat for six guests.
At its heart is a superb open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, made for long breakfasts, family suppers and properly relaxed stays. A full-width wall of floor-to-ceiling glass and sliding doors runs across the room, bringing in the garden, the changing light and the view towards Pen y Fan. The owners have put real thought into every part of the house: the décor feels stylish but comfortable, the kitchen is well equipped for cooking together, and the useful utility room is ideal for boots, coats, dog towels and drying off after a walk. High-tech Sonos picture-frame speakers are also provided for music throughout your stay.
There are three comfortable bedrooms and three bathrooms, giving everyone space to settle in. Outside, the generous gardens offer several places to sit, eat and linger over a drink. There is plenty of driveway parking, an EV charger and thoughtful sustainable features throughout.
The house stands on the northern edge of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, around a mile from Brecon. Despite feeling wonderfully peaceful, it is easy to head into town for independent shops, cafés, pubs, restaurants and everything you may need during your stay. The canal basin is a particularly lovely place for a stroll, with narrowboats, waterside cafés and a towpath that leads out into the surrounding countryside.
The real joy of staying here is having so much of the National Park on your doorstep. Pen y Fan rises in the distance and is close enough for an early start, a packed lunch and a rewarding day on the mountain. Footpaths and riding routes can be picked up nearby, while there are plenty of gentler options too: woodland trails, riverside walks and days around Talybont Reservoir.
Further afield, explore the Black Mountains, visit Hay-on-Wye for bookshops and lunch, or head to Crickhowell for independent food shops and welcoming pubs. Then come back to a house that feels considered, peaceful and a little bit special, with the garden, the view and a glass of something cold waiting for you.
