Set high above the historic village of Clun, Dick Turpin Cottage is a peaceful, detached retreat for two, surrounded by 20 acres of private woodland and countryside. Reached by a long private drive, it feels wonderfully tucked away, with no passing traffic, neighbours overlooking or need to rush anywhere.
Inside, the cottage is light, spacious and thoughtfully finished, combining original character with the comforts you want for a relaxed stay. The sitting room has a real log-burning stove for cosy evenings in, along with French doors opening on to a private west-facing terrace. There is a well-equipped kitchen for easy suppers at home, a generous bedroom with a large, comfortable bed and a separate dressing area, plus a bathroom with both a full-sized bath and a large walk-in shower. A second WC and a useful utility room with washing machine add to the practical touches.
The outdoor space is a real highlight. Enjoy breakfast on the terrace, take a book up to the elevated seating area beneath the trees, or simply sit back with a glass of wine as the sun goes down over the south Shropshire hills. Please note that the cottage is reached via a steep gravel drive and a short flight of steps.
Clun is around a mile away, a lovely little place for a wander, a coffee or a pub lunch. At its heart are the ruins of Clun Castle, the historic packhorse bridge over the River Clun and a small collection of independent shops, cafés and everyday essentials. It is the kind of village where you can happily explore for an hour or two before heading back to the peace of the cottage.
The surrounding Shropshire Hills are made for walking. There are routes straight from the door through quiet lanes, woodland and open countryside, while longer days out can take in the Clun Forest, the Long Mynd or the Stiperstones. It is a beautiful area for anyone who enjoys being outdoors, whether that means a proper hike, a gentle ramble or a scenic drive through the hills.
Craven Arms is within easy reach for the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre and Stokesay Castle, one of England’s finest fortified manor houses. Ludlow is also an easy day out, with its castle, independent food shops, excellent restaurants and handsome historic streets. After a day of exploring, there is nowhere better than this quiet hillside cottage to come back to.
