English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Surrounded by fields, this holiday property is set in a peaceful location and is an ideal base for exploring Sussex.

Lovingly renovated, this beautiful oak framed Sussex barn conversion stands detached, and was originally built in the 1800s. It is an ideal base for two couples or a family, as both bedrooms have an en-suite bathroom. Beamed throughout and boasting solar underfloor heating with the benefit of a wood-burning stove in the part-galleried living space, guests will feel relaxed in these stylish surroundings, whatever the weather. The holiday property is situated in the owner’s 37½-acre grounds, surrounded by fields with sheep, geese, ducks and chickens, and the owner also has a shrub and perennial nursery. Guests have sole use of the orchard area. Herstmonceux is not only home to the hands-on Observatory Science Centre housed amongst the domes and telescopes of the former Royal Greenwich Observatory, there is the magnificent Herstmonceux Castle where a stroll can be taken around the Elizabethan gardens. The town also produces Henner’s medal-winning sparkling wine. Because Sussex has a sunny climate and chalky subsoil (the same as that in Champagne in France), the county also produces wonderful sparkling wines. If the beach calls, head for Pevensey where the Romans landed, and you can tackle the beautiful 31-mile 1066 Country Walk which starts at Pevensey via Herstmonceux, and on to Battle and then the Cinque Port town of Rye. Golf and fishing lakes close by. Trains to London from Polegate. Beach 8 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1¼ miles.

Four steps to entrance. Beamed, open-plan living/dining room with wood-burning stove, French doors and well equipped kitchen area with travertine marble floor. Cloakroom with toilet. Open-tread, oak stairs to first floor (open to one side): Galleried landing. Two beamed bedrooms, each with travertine marble floor and en-suite bathroom with shower attachment and toilet; one double and one twin.

Lovely barn cottage in a stunning quiet location with fields of lambs geese and ducks nearby. Spacious, comfortable and well equipped. So much to see and do in the area we did not manage to tick all on our list. Lewes and Rye were the favourite towns and we managed to see Brighton at it's best, with a music street festival in full flow on a very warm day.

We had a lovely time at Chilsham Barn. It is a beautiful place with all commodities. The hosts are lovely, very discrete but always available if you have a query. It is very quiet and relaxing. There are good places to eat nearby, like the excellent Bull Head pub, but you have all you need at the barn if you wish to cook. We have really appreciated the welcome basket and the little things like a bottle of milk and tea and coffee. We would highly recommend that place for few days or a longer stay. Thank you for your hospitality.

Our stay at Chilsham barn was really lovely and we had everything we could have wanted. The décor is lovely inside and in keeping with the style of the barn. I would definitely recommend it and would stay again. We travelled into Hastings which was about 25 minutes away and a nice drive.

A gorgeous barn that was so beautifully presented. It was the perfect place to come back to after a chilly day out and about. It was great for our toddler too. The owner Nick was very friendly and helpful and sorted out any minor issues very promptly. We were greeted with lots of goodies and he even bought us a box of chocolates for a very small problem with the hot water that he resolved very quickly. There was lots to do just a short drive away. Great for kids and great for adults. We would definitely stay here again :)

We all enjoyed our stay in the stunning Barn conversion. On arrival it was nice to meet the owner who showed us around and explained some things we needed to know. A food hamper was a nice touch.

Chilsham Barn was an absolute joy to stay in. Everything you could want and more. lovely welcome pack and a very friendly welcome from owners that were unobtrusive but near at hand if needed. Barn was down a very narrow lane that when wet was very muddy, but does not distract from the lovely barn and lovely area of country.

We had a fantastic week at Chilsham Barn, and were made to feel welcome by the owners as soon as we arrived. The welcome basket was such a lovely suprise, and the barn was warm, very clean and well equipped. The cosey log burner was lovely to return home to of an evening and the peaceful location of the property was so relaxing. We wouldn't hessitate to recommend Chilsham Barn to anyone, and plan to return here again soon!
